Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most solid concept manga ever released by Shonen Jump. One such concept is the Cursed Spirit, a supernatural being created from human negative emotions. That negative emotions can be in the form of fear, anger, disgust, hate, and many more. All these negative emotions eventually gather and have different forms depending on where the negative emotions are directed.
There are so many Cursed Spirits that appear in Jujutsu Kaisen, each of these Cursed Spirits has their own unique abilities and powers. In this article we will talk about the Spirits that classify as Special Grade Cursed Spirit in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Where did they come from? What kind of thing inspires their creation?
1. Jogo - a Volcano
Judging from its appearance, as well as the techniques and moves he uses, it is clear that Jogo was inspired by the volcanoes. Japan itself is an island nation that has many active volcanoes.
So why is there a Cursed Spirits in the form of the Volcano? Negative emotions in the form of fear of the Volcanic eruptions is the answer why Gojo was created. Since ancient times, many Japanese people have been afraid of volcanoes.
Because Japanese people have these strong negative emotions towards the volcanoes from time to time, it is not surprising that Gojo becomes an overpowered Cursed Spirit figure. Just like other Cursed Spirits, Gojo will keep reappearing as long as human negative emotions towards volcanoes persist, even though it’s exorcised.
2. Hanami – a Forest
There is a deep fear felt by humans towards the forest, from ancient times until now in modern times. The many dangers in the forest, such as wild animals or poisonous plants, is the cause of humans' negative emotions towards the forest. That feeling is also worsened by the many scary rumors about crimes or even horror incidents in the forest.
Japan itself has a lot of forests. Even one of the forests, Aokigahara, is a place that is often used for suicide by the Japanese people. That fear feeling that eventually gathers and manifests into the power of one of the Special Grade Cursed Spirits, Hanami.
3. Dagon - a Sea
Japan is one of the countries that is frequently hit by tsunamis. This makes most Japanese people who live near the sea always have a sense of worry and fear of the sea. The fear that had gathered from ancient times until modern times, gathered together and formed as Dagon. In the manga, Dagon himself has a form like an octopus (a sea creature) and has a domain expansion in the form of a sea filled with sea beasts.
Interestingly, the name Dagon itself comes from the ancient Mesopotamia civilization God of Fish. Both his name and form also take many references from the fictional works of H.P. Lovecraft— the creator of Cthulhu Mythos.
4. Mahito – a Human
In my personal opinion, Mahito is one of the most philosophical Cursed Spirits created by the Jujutsu Kaisen mangaka, Gege Akutami. It feels like it has become a human nature that we will hate, envy, and even curse each other.
All these negative emotions that are thrown from one human to another humans that eventually create Mahito, a Special Grade Cursed Spirit. Mahito also became threatening to the human itself because it’s able to manipulate human "life".
That's all our write-up about the Special Grade Cursed Spirit, the main enemy in Jujutsu Kaisen. It turns out, everything that was created was based on Japanese culture. Because of that, I personally feel that Jujutsu Kaisen is one of those manga that has a solid concept and is somewhat philosophical.
If Jujutsu Kaisen is based on Indonesian daily lives, what kind of negative emotion will create the Cursed Spirits? Tell us your opinion in the comments section!
