Guardians of the Galaxy 3 brought an epic and emotional ending to the franchise. After nearly a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the first chapter of the Guardians saga has finally come to an end. Many are wondering whether this movie will continue or not.
While some of the Guardians will certainly return in later MCU movies, each of them gets some kind of ending in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Several of these endings prove to be very emotional and fitting, ending each character's long journey.
This time we will discuss the explanation of the entire ending of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Curious? The following is the full discussion.
Mantis
While it's possible Mantis will emerge as the next leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the character makes a surprising departure from the team at the end of their latest movie. Realizing that he never had the chance to choose his own life, Mantis went off on his own to end his story.
This ending shows that the audience has never seen Mantis like this. In fact, his journey seems to hint that Mantis is starting a new chapter of his character's arc in the MCU, setting him up for future adventures.
Groot
Groot, generally one of the happiest characters in the MCU, gets a relatively unemotional but innovative ending in this movie. As well as expanding his vocabulary, Groot also seems to have finally reached his full growth, developing into a large kaiju-like creature in the movie's mid-credits scene.

Groot's new design heralds a new era for the character in the MCU, one that is also very similar to his appearance in Marvel Comics. His final moments in the movie also imply that Groot will indeed return, perhaps as a more central character, in future MCU movies.
Nebula
The end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 sees Nebula committing to the team, stepping in to run the day-to-day running of Knowhere with Cosmo, Kraglin, and Drax.
Nebula is really far from his evil roots at the beginning of this movie. The latest movie shows how altruistic the character can be, devoting his life to making Knowhere refugees feel safe and comfortable. It's the perfect ending for his character, as he has finally found the place where he belongs.
Gamora
In a striking and effective subversion of audience expectations, Gamora does not join the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of the movie. Instead, Peter Quill and his former teammates learn to accept this new Gamora as she is, not as she wants her to be. In the end, Gamora returned to the Ravagers.
Gamora has consistently been one of Marvel's best-written female characters, with each new appearance delving deeper into her characterization. Even with the death of the original Gamora, this new version of the character maintains her legacy without repeating the same story as before.
Drax
Drax gets a very happy ending in this movie. After he and his team rescued a group of children from the High Evolutionary ship, they were brought back to Knowhere, where Drax assumed their father figure. Overcome with glee for the first time in years, Drax lets go of his inhibitions and begins dancing in the final moments of the movie.
This ending gave Drax what he had longed for: fatherhood.
Star-Lord
Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord went through some heavy character development in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. After narrowly avoiding death aboard the explosion ship High Evolutionary, Quill finally decides to return home to reunite with his grandfather, whom he has not seen since the Ravagers kidnapped him when he was little.
Quill's reunion with his grandfather is both emotional and beautiful, but also very important to his character's future. After a long time of adventuring, Peter is finally ready to face his childhood trauma and finds himself back on Earth.
Rocket Raccoon
Rocket Raccoon is the emotional center of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and the franchise as a whole. After surviving the battle with the High Evolutionary against all odds, Rocket becomes the new captain of the Guardians, training and leading a new team that includes Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Phyla-Vell, and Adam Warlock.
Rocket's farewell promises a better future, having finally accepted his role as leader among the Guardians.
