Fans of the film Dune who are looking forward to the sequel of the film should be patient a little longer. Official news from the film studio and production company states that the release of Dune: Part Two has been delayed by four months from its original schedule.
Previously, as reported by Engadget (28/8), this film was supposed to be released on November 3, 2023. However, due to a strike by writers in Hollywood, the film's release was postponed to March 13, 2024.
According to a source from The Hollywood Reporter, "The studio and production company put the film on hold for as long as they could." In the film industry, promotions and advertisements usually start several months before release, and the original plan was to start the advertising campaign in early September. This delay will of course affect the schedule.
Another reason for the delay, according to reports, is to give the entire cast, which includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken, to participate fully in the film's production. This delay has also affected the release schedules of other films, including 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire', which will now be released on April 12, 2024, and 'Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim', which has been pushed back to December 13, 2024.
The strike itself comes as a result of the long-standing dispute between writers and actors in Hollywood and major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. Both these platforms have come under scrutiny for not paying the writers and actors the residual rights they deserve, especially after their decision to release some films directly on the streaming platform without going through a theatrical release.
However, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said last year that the company "will fully embrace cinema" for the foreseeable future, although many remain skeptical about this promise.
It is important to note that Dune: Part One has been successful at the box office grossing around USD 402 million. Expectations for the sequel were certainly much higher, especially considering comments from director Denis Villeneuve who said, "Part One was more of a contemplative film. Part Two is an epic, action-packed war film. Much denser. We went to all new locations."
The news of the delay is certainly disappointing, but the hope is that this extra time will be used to improve the quality of the film so that it can meet, or even exceed, the high expectations of fans.
