Syauki "Nino" Sumarno is probably well-known in the competitive Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) scene as one of the mainstays of the Alter Ego Esports team. The player, more familiarly known as Nino, has been a pro MLBB player for quite some time, almost five years, similar to other well-known players like Skylar and Alberttt. However, Nino's career with Alter Ego hasn't been as smooth as other players.
While he never won MPL or other international competitions, Nino continued to strive to reach the pinnacle of his career. He tried various methods, including changing roles to meet the team's needs. However, this is what kept him growing and developing, ultimately leading to Nino achieving career glory at the recent M7 World Championship, where he was named a Rising Star Player. Nino's Profile - Trivia
1. Early Career as a Pro Player
Nino began his pro career in the Nimo TV Mobile Legends Arena Season 2 competition with several of his relatives from Sukabumi, joining the ANO Team. Although Nino's achievements weren't impressive at the time, Alter Ego recruited him, and Nino began his playing career in MDL Indonesia Season 3 with Alter Ego X. After one season of training at the MDL level, Nino was called back to play at the MPL level.
2. MPL Career: Ups and Downs Over Seasons
Nino's career in the MPL was arguably quite successful. He and Alter Ego made it to the playoffs almost every season. However, Alter Ego struggled to overcome or advance in the play-in round. Instead of winning, they lost more often in the play-in rounds over several seasons, making Nino and Alter Ego's chances of winning or even qualifying for the MLBB World Championship tournament slim, to almost nonexistent.
Nevertheless, he persisted, even though Alter Ego's roster frequently changed with each passing season, incorporating various highly talented players. While he consistently led his team to playoff qualifications, there were times when Nino and Alter Ego also experienced the disappointment of not making it. This was part of Nino's storied career in MPL Indonesia.
3. The Downfall Era
As mentioned previously, in the first few seasons of Nino's MPL career, he did manage to reach the playoffs with Alter Ego. The highlight was MPL Indonesia Season 11 in early 2023, when Alter Ego finished in third place after losing to EVOS Legends. The nightmare then returned in season 12. The arrival of R E K T to the team didn't smooth things out for Alter Ego. Instead of qualifying for the playoffs as usual, in MPL Indonesia Season 12, El Familia failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time.
This wasn't the lowest point in Nino's career. In fact, not only in season 12 but also in season 13, Alter Ego failed to make the playoffs again and again. El Familia continued to advance, their quest for the championship title not over, and Nino was still striving to give his best performance for Alter Ego. Season 14, the long-awaited revival finally arrived.
4. Regeneration, Role Change, and Revival
As the seasons changed, Nino matured alongside Alter Ego. In MPL Indonesia Season 14, Nino indirectly assumed the status of senior or veteran player on the team. Nnael's presence on the team indirectly encouraged El Familia to be more flexible, aggressive, and bold. This season, Nino officially switched roles to EXP Laner, with Haizz filling the Gold Lane. In his first season as EXP Laner, Nino tried to adapt quickly.
Alter Ego's fortunes slowly improved in this 14th season. However, unfortunately, their old "illness" recurred, as they were eliminated in the play-ins round against Bigetron Alpha. Nino shed tears and delivered a touching message to Alter Ego CEO, Delwyn Sukamto, about his failure alongside Alter Ego's young stars. The phrase "Sorry Koh..." then began to be coined in this 14th season. Life goes on, and Nino continues to train and develop himself.
Nino was officially coached by former DOTA2 pro player Kenny "Xepher" Deo. In season 15, Nino also welcomed new faces: young Alter Ego stars who received promotions, such as Arfy and Rinee, and DreamS, who previously played for EVOS. This season, Alter Ego performed better than the previous season. However, their progress was halted by losses to RRQ Hoshi and Geek Fam.
5. Second Change: Team "Hoki" and the M7 World Championship
In season 16, Xepher made another change. He removed Alter Ego X's jungler, Yazuke, and DreamS, replacing him with Alekk (Owenn), who had previously roamed in the MDL. He also added Hijumee as midlaner, replacing RoundeL. Alter Ego's performance in season 16 has been significantly improved. Nino and his teammates finally made their way back into the playoffs without hesitation.
Entering the playoffs, Alter Ego brought a different kind of strength. Nino and his teammates leveraged each victory, based on pure luck, into a new title for El Familia. Slowly, they defeated all their opponents, including Natus Vincere (NaVi), Bigetron by Vitality, and finally, they met ONIC in the Upper Bracket Final. Despite losing to ONIC, Alter Ego defeated EVOS and became the second Indonesian team to advance to the M7 World Championship. This was their second time returning to the international stage after M2 in 2020.
Nino and his teammates made history. However, they were unable to secure the MPL ID S16 title. Their luck continued into the M7 World Championship. Alter Ego swept the Swiss Stage and eventually advanced to the Knockout Stage. The Knockout Stage was full of twists and turns for Alter Ego, managing to win despite initial losses and then rebounding to sweep two giant teams at once.
At the M7 World Championship, Nino also received the M7 Rising Star award. This award was given for his hard work, and Nino's performance was a key factor in each of Alter Ego's victories. Ultimately, Alter Ego lost in the Grand Final and finished as runner-up. However, this significant event proved that Nino and his teammates are now not to be underestimated in the coming seasons.
