As one of the best coaches in the current Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) competitive scene, Kenny "Xepher" Deo is recognized by many fans. As Alter Ego's coach, Xepher has only transitioned into the competitive MLBB scene in the past year. However, his achievements have become increasingly impressive, and he has finally shown rapid progress, especially at the M7 World Championship. Xepher's genius successfully led Alter Ego to a runner-up finish at the M7 World Championship.
Xepher's success at the M7 World Championship has brought him one step closer to his peers who have already been involved in the competitive MLBB scene, including Adi (Acil), the coach of ONIC, Khezcute (RRQ Hoshi), and SaintDeLucaz & Facehugger (Team Liquid ID), some names who also share Xepher's background. Xepher's Profile - Trivia
1. Career Background - DOTA2 Pro Player
As previously mentioned, Xepher was a former professional player in the competitive PC MOBA game DOTA2. Throughout his career, Xepher has played at both the national and international levels. Xepher's career background is similar to that of several other renowned MLBB coaches, such as Khezcute, Adi (Acil), SaintDeLucaz, and Facehugger. Xepher has played for various DOTA2 teams, including Team RRQ, Geek Fam, BOOM Esports, and T1.
Ultimately, Xepher decided to retire as a DOTA2 pro player and transition into an MLBB coach. Alter Ego became his first coaching position, and Xepher will continue to coach El Familia for the foreseeable future.
2. The Transition to Alter Ego Came from Luthfi Halimawan
After leaving his position as a DOTA2 pro player, Xepher transitioned into a Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) coach. Fortunately, during his transition, a team quickly approached him. Alter Ego, an MLBB team, was interested in Xepher and asked him to become a coach. However, this wasn't a coincidence. At that time, Luthfi Halimawan, the team's top executive, asked Kenny (Xepher's nickname) to join the team.
This was also revealed in the Dyland PROS podcast, where Xepher stated, "The next day (I) got a call. It was truly a miracle, (a call) from Luthfi. It was completely random. I don't even know Mobile Legends, I don't even have any connections. Suddenly, I got a call, and I was confused, I swear. This world is full of miracles," said Xepher in the Dyland PROS podcast.
3. A Winding Career Start
Xepher eventually joined Alter Ego and brought his iconic line to the team, "Mamah, I'm at Alter Ego." Slowly, he rebuilt El Familia's strength with the existing roster. In his first season, he was assisted by veteran Gustian "R E K T" Hidayat as an assistant, along with Mekel "Styx" Abraham. Xepher's first season at Alter Ego was quite smooth. In MPL Indonesia Season 15, he successfully led El Familia to the playoffs, marking Xepher's first playoffs as a team coach.
Alter Ego finished fifth in the Regular Season standings and qualified for the playoffs. In fact, not only did they qualify, but they also defeated Bigetron by Vitality. This victory proved that Xepher had successfully adapted to the competitive scene and led his team to great heights. However, El Familia's progress was halted by Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) Hoshi. Alter Ego was then sent down to the Lower Bracket, where their progress was halted by Geek Fam.
4. Season of Revenge, Xepher's First MLBB World Championship
Bouncing back from failure, Xepher returned with Alter Ego for MPL Indonesia Season 16 (MPL ID S16). Unlike last season, this time Xepher was entrusted with bringing a promising young squad. The presence of Yazuke and Alekk, who won MDL with Alter Ego X, was a key asset for El Familia in MPL ID S16. The results were quite satisfactory, with Alter Ego finishing third in the Regular Season standings, and with Xepher, El Familia again qualified for the playoffs.
Alter Ego's journey in the MPL ID S16 playoffs was quite smooth. They defeated Natus Vincere (NaVi) and Bigetron by Vitality. For the first time, Alter Ego successfully returned to the Upper Bracket Finals, where they faced ONIC, the Regular Season champions. Alter Ego succumbed to ONIC after a fierce battle. Alter Ego would then face EVOS in the Lower Bracket Final.
A ticket to the Grand Final and the chance to represent Indonesia at the M7 World Championship secured them a spot in the tournament. Xepher once again demonstrated his genius. Alter Ego defeated EVOS 4-2, marking El Familia's return to the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship after five years, when they last played at the M2 World Championship.
It was truly a proud journey. Xepher celebrated the moment with his iconic line, "Mama, I'm in M7!" In the 16th season, Alter Ego finished runner-up, while ONIC won the championship.
5. A "Lucky" Stride at the M7 World Championship: Runner-Up Represents Indonesia
An interesting aspect of Alter Ego's journey at the M7 World Championship is that behind their success, the word "Luck" or luck was always used. Alter Ego seemed to avoid highlighting the quality of the skills of individual players or the team as a whole. However, this was not a problem, of course. Alter Ego was labeled "lucky" for every victory and the process they went through throughout the M7 World Championship.
Alter Ego smoothly advanced through the Swiss Stage and became the first Indonesian team to advance to the Knockout Stage. One by one, their opponents were defeated, including their compatriots ONIC, who were defeated early in the Knockout Stage, sending the Yellow Porcupines down to the Lower Bracket. Alter Ego's "lucky" streak continued through the Knockout Stage.
However, another test awaited them when they faced AURORA PH. Xepher and his team had to accept defeat and drop to the Lower Bracket. El Familia's lucky streak began here, as Alter Ego defeated various formidable opponents, including Team Spirit, MPL PH giants Team Liquid PH, and MPL MY giants Selangor Red Giants. El Familia advanced to the Grand Final of the M7 World Championship.
Alter Ego's journey in the M7 World Championship also suffered the same result as MPL ID S16. El Familia had to settle for runner-up after being defeated by AURORA PH with a score of 4-0. Nevertheless, Indonesia is proud and appreciates the hard work of the entire team, players, coaches, and management staff who have strived to reach this point. This is certainly a significant step forward in Xepher's career, and he will not stop there. He will continue to pursue further competitive stages for Alter Ego.
