Kugutsu no Jutsu, aka the puppet controlling technique, is a unique ninjutsu fighting style. Usually, this technique is studied by the ninjas in Sunagakure, Kugutsu no Jutsu allows the users to control wooden puppets using a special thread flowed by chakra.

The thread is not only used to control the puppet’s movements but also to activate various traps or hidden weapons inside the puppet’s body, so it allows the user of this technique to attack from a short distance to kill their target. They can also leave their puppets as a distraction if the mission is successfully carried out.

The more expert the user, then they only need less thread to be used when control a puppet; it was seen on how Chiyo was able to control a puppet using only a single thread, which allows her to use 10 puppets (on each finger) at the same time.

Someone called Monzaemon Chikamatsu is considered to be the inventor of Kugutsu no Jutsu technique. Initially, Monzaemon only made it for fun, but then he collaborated with the ninjas to create a tool for war. However, based on Retsu no Sho's guidebook released for the film The Last: Naruto the Movie, it was revealed that before the technique of Monzaemon was born, this technique had already been created in advance by the Otsutsuki Clan.

Just like a martial arts school, there are several types of fighting styles that can be learned by those who want to master Kugutsu no Jutsu. So far, there are only 3 'classes' that have been revealed, namely:

• Shirohigi, White Secret Technique - practiced by Monzaemon and Chiyo.
• Akahigi, Red Secret Technique - practiced by Sasori and Kankuro.
• Kurohigi, Black Secret Technique - practiced by Kankuro.

It is unclear what are the differences of each style, but the thing that can be noticed from each user is the color of their clothes and the puppets they use which show what style they are using; Kankuro with his all-black clothes, Chiyo wore a large white scarf and mastered 10 white-robed Chikamatsu Puppets, and Sasori who used 100 red-robed puppets.

Although it has many advantages that are not commonly found in other ninjutsu, Kugutsu no Jutsu still has several disadvantages:

1. Fighting style that focuses on concentration in long-range combat that makes it difficult for them to face short-rang combat and pay attention to small actions around them.
2. If all of their puppets have been destroyed by the enemy, they will have difficulty responding to the next attack.
3. If their hands are paralyzed, the puppet will also stop moving.
4. Damaging the puppet’s mechanism from the inside can disrupt the puppet’s movements.
5. There is a time pause between the movements that the user wants to make and the movements that the puppet will make.

However, the skilled users of the Kugutsu no Jutsu technique managed to find a way to overcome these fatal weaknesses. First, by discovering techniques for controlling corpses or other people who are still alive; second, switching positions between his body and the puppet in a very short time so that he can trap approaching opponents; third, make the puppet as a protective suit or even transform himself into a puppet.
