Alter Ego is currently one of the best Mobile Legends teams after winning the 2020 MPL Invitational. Alter Ego’s transformation began from the start of the MPL Season 6, where they made it into the finals and came up against the reigning champion at the time, RRQ Hoshi.

While they ended up as the runner-up, Alter Ego had an impressive run in the MPL Season 6 compared to their performance throughout the MPL Season 5.  So, what was the journey like for Alter Ego’s Mobile Legends team from their inception? What led to their recent dramatic rise in performance? Check out the team profile here.

The Inception of Alter Ego’s Mobile Legends Team

Initially, Delwyn Sukamto, the owner and CEO of Alter Ego, received news that there would be an opening of the biggest esports league in Indonesia, the IESPL. This league had four categories of games: Dota 2; Point Blank; CS: GO; and Mobile Legends.

From there, Koh Delwyn built teams for each of those games, including Mobile Legends.

Alter Ego, as a newcomer at the time, was able to prove the doubters wrong by finishing at the top of the standings, with just one defeat and one draw.

Arss’ Crucial Role in Forming Alter Ego’s Roster

Arasy Zamunullail, commonly known as “Arss”, was a former Louvre team who shone in the MPL ID Season 1. After leaving Louvre, Arss received an offer to bolster Alter Ego’s Mobile Legends roster.

Arss made a contribution in establishing the roster by approaching Ahmad (Maungzy), who didn’t manage to make it into Bigetron Esports’ Mobile Legends team due to his playstyle not being suitable for the team. Since there were still a lot of rooms in the roster, Ahmad then recommended Jo (former Saints Indo Junior) to Arss.

After conducting a series of tests, Jo was eventually accepted as an Alter Ego player.

The next addition to the team was “Rage”, Arss’ old friend who often carries others’ accounts in Mobile Legends. They also got LeoMurphy, who was Ahmad’s former teammate, now known as Leo “Tastas” Murphy.

Last but not least, they also got Caesius, Arss’ buddy who took a role as the team manager but changed his role later on to become a player since the MPL ID Season 3.

Alter Ego’s Debut in the MPL ID

Alter Ego made their debut as an MPL ID team in the league’s third season. Back then, they made a  roster overhaul by bringing in new players: Caesius; Chester; and SamoHt. Unfortunately, both Jo and “Rage” decided to leave the team and join FlashWolves.

According to Kincir.com, Jo and Rage’s exit was due to differences in perspectives with the other three players (Arss, Maungzy, and LeoMurphy).

The reason behind Caesius’ recruitment is because the team manager, Daniel Chen, was no stranger to him. He also put faith in Caesius due to his excellent performance in the MPL ID Season 1. While Chester was signed purely due to his skills as a player.

Alas, Alter Ego’s journey in the MPL ID Season 3 wasn’t as smooth as their triumph in the IESPL. They were eliminated in the playoffs by Louvre in a 2-1 defeat and finished 5th. The team that came out as the winner in the MPL ID Season 3 was Onic Esports, who were really at their peak back then.

"The Miracle Boy", Celiboy’s Arrival in Alter Ego

As the MPL ID Season 4 rolled out, Alter Ego was undergoing another roster overhaul. They added three new names: Rmitchi who previously played for Louvre; Celiboy from Capcorn; and YoxXD. However, Alter Ego had to lose one of their players, SamoHt.

Playing in the regular season of the MPL Season 4, Alter Ego had an impressive performance. Celiboy, who was the youngest among the players showed great potential in turning Alter Ego into an intimidating team. From then on out, Celiboy is often referred to as The Miracle Boy.

Alter Ego’s constant raise in performance made other big teams like EVOS Esports and RRQ started to pay attention to them. Alter Ego became the dark horse in the MPL ID. Alter Ego ended the MPL ID Season 4 regular season in third place with 10 wins and 4 defeats.

However, in the playoffs, Alter Ego’s journey to the title was ended once again by RRQ twice, both in the upper and lower bracket.

The Departure of the Pioneer, Arss, from the Main Team

Ahead of the MPL ID Season 5, Alter Ego decided to remove Arss from the main team and send him to the second division of the professional Mobile Legends league, the MDL -- followed by YoxXD. From then on, Chester was appointed as the team coach.

Losing three of their players, Alter Ego brought in YAM, who used to play for Aura Esports. YAM’s signing was not without any reason. According to MPL ID’s official site, Alter Ego’s manager, Aditya Budi Santoso, said that his team needed a strong offlaner, and YAM definitely had the potential.

In the regular season of the MPL ID 5, Ahmad and his teammates had a mediocre performance. They even suffered 7 defeats from 14 matches. In fact, Alter Ego was eliminated from Day 1 of the MPL ID Season 5 playoffs after being defeated by ONIC Esports in a 2-1 defeat.

Udil and NasiUduk’s Success in Restoring Alter Ego’s Identity

As the next season began, the esports scene was surprised by Udil who moved from ONIC Esports to Alter Ego. Udil’s move to Alter Ego was due to Caesius’ role, who contacted him via Whatsapp.

"Ilyas contacted me on Whatsapp. I didn’t expect to be contacted via Whatsapp, since parents are the ones who use Whatsapp, young people use Line," Udil said on Alter Ego’s YouTube account.

Udil revealed the reason for his move, one of which was that he wanted to play more games. The reason being, Udil was started to play less in the MPL ID Season 5 as he was replaced by Rasy.

Wearing his new jersey and a new badge, Udil managed to restore Alter Ego’s identity, a team that was once known as the dark horse. He even managed to beat his former team twice, ONIC Esports, who at the time was having an amazing run with Sanz as the Carry.

Alter Ego’s dominance in the MPL ID Season 6 was within the contribution of their new coach, NasiUduk, who was a former Arena of Valor pro-player, and PAI’s promotion from the MDL to the MPL ID.

Alter Ego’s scintillating run continued until the end of the regular season, where they led the standings with 11 wins and 3 defeats.

In the playoffs, Alter Ego came up against RRQ Hoshi, the winner of the MPL ID Season 5. While RRQ Hoshi was struggling earlier in the season, in the finals, The King returned to its prime.

The clash between the two teams was intense and deemed by many as the biggest, craziest game in the history of the MPL ID. After failing to secure Lord on multiple occasions and lost Turrets, Alter Ego had to admit RRQ Hoshi’s superiority and came out as the runner-up of the MPL ID Season 6.

Moving Up from Being the Dark Horse Team

Having to settle for a runner-up spot in the MPL Season 6 didn’t stop Ahmad and teammates from keep learning and improving. Participating in the MPL Invitational 2020, they had the second chance for a rematch with The King, although it’s not in the finals.

This rematch was one of the highly anticipated games, as Alter Ego was looking to retaliate their dramatic loss in the MPL ID Season 6.

In a complete thrashing, Alter Ego crushed The King in a 2-0 clean sweep, proving that the dark horse tag was no longer fitting for them.

It’s not just The King that they conquered, but also Geek Fam ID, the team that had a series of great games throughout the MPL Invitational 2020. And, this victory led them to face the Philippines representative, Bren Esports, in the finals.

In the finals, Alter Ego showed their class by not even giving a single point for Bren Esports. As a result, they won their first title in the Mobile Legends professional esports scene. They have a big chance of winning the Mobile Legends M2 if they are able to stay consistent and maintain their recent form.
