Upgraded PSSR Upscaler Comes to PS5 Pro, Brings Stunning Image Quality
Improved PSSR technology on the PlayStation 5 Pro is ready to deliver the stunning visual quality of Resident Evil Requiem.

A technological breakthrough in the console industry has just been announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment through a significant upgrade to their AI upscaler system. The latest version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is scheduled to launch globally in the coming weeks. To date, PSSR technology has successfully boosted the effective resolution of over 50 game titles on the PlayStation 5 Pro console. However, this update promises a vastly different approach, both in its neural network and overall algorithm, aimed at keeping image quality sharp without sacrificing smooth frame rates.
Capcom’s latest horror title, Resident Evil Requiem, has been chosen as the first game to implement this advanced version of PSSR. Through the support of an enhanced RE Engine, the developers are focusing on the presentation details of the main protagonist to deepen player immersion in the chilling atmosphere. One striking example of this detail is how each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a full polygon. This allows every strand to move realistically in response to body motion or gusts of wind, including the way light filters through the hair, changing dynamically based on the density of the strands.
Masaru Ijuin, senior manager of Capcom’s foundational technology department, revealed that the upgraded PSSR algorithm is capable of processing complex texture details exceptionally well. Previously, fine details like strands of hair were often difficult to upscale due to their intricacy, but the new technology has successfully overcome this with remarkable results. The hope is that fans can experience an unprecedented level of visual precision and horror atmosphere, delivering a gaming sensation that feels truly fresh and lifelike on their television screens.
Behind this sophistication, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect of the PlayStation 5, explained that this algorithm is the result of a strategic partnership titled Project Amethyst with AMD. The technology is rooted in the FSR 4 upscaling features that PC players have already benefited from. However, for PlayStation 5 Pro users, this version of PSSR has received an additional six months of refinement to provide the most optimal results. Sony plans to share more information later this March, alongside a system software update that will allow users to manually enable the "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" option in the settings menu.
