Besides Kratos, God of War that was released on PlayStation 4 also presents a side character named Atreus. The boy is Kratos’ son and might be the next main character of the God of War franchise.

Not many are known about Atreus aside from being Kratos’ son. The one interesting thing about him is that his abilities are similar to his grandfather, Zeus. He also has electricity-related abilities like Zeis. However, according to the God of War storyline, adult Atreus might be a threat to Nordic gods.

Still a young boy, young Atreus didn’t know much about his father, Kratos. Despite being kept a secret, little by little, his father’s past is revealed. But Atreus hasn’t learned the biggest secret of his father. What are they? Find out on the list below.

1. His Past

One of the things that Kratos keeps secret from Atreus is his past. Atreus doesn’t know that his father was a rising captain of the Spartan army. Atreus didn't even know that his father had thousands of troops under his command. Until finally he was dubbed the "Ghost of Sparta". But Kratos doesn't want to be called that, and it looks like Kratos forbids Mimir to say it when he talks about it, especially when in front of Atreus.

2. Kratos Killed His Own Mom

Kratos is the son of the strongest god and ruler of Olympus, Zeus. Kratos is the son of Zeus from his marriage with a human named Callisto. But who would have thought that Kratos had to deal with his mother and had to kill her. After saying that she had been cursed by Zeus and asking Kratos to free her, Callisto immediately turned into a terrible monster. Kratos certainly tried to stop and end his mother's life. The story of his grandmother's death is certainly not known by his son, Atreus.

3. Kratos had a Brother

Another secret that Atreus of Kratos doesn't know is that his father has a younger brother named Deimos. He is Kratos’s younger brother from Callisto. Deimos was first introduced in God of War: Ghost of Spartan which is a prequel released by Santa Monica Studios. Deimos is described as "The Marked One Prophecy" or the warrior who is destined to destroy Mount Olympus. But Deimos died after helping Kratos fight the god of death, Thanatos. The death of his brother also became the foundation of Kratos' hatred of gods who play with humans. 

4. Skin Color

For those who are new to God of War, you may not know much about the truth behind Kratos' skin color. Kratos has a pale white skin color like the moon. Kratos got this pale skin after accidentally slaughtering his family. So Kratos has to be punished for his actions. His entire body was covered in the burnt ashes of his family, and made Kratos' skin white as pale as the full moon. It was then that he became known as the Ghost of Sparta. Kratos' pale skin color is a secret that Atreus doesn't know.

5. Killed His Own Father

The biggest secret that Atreus doesn't know is that he is the grandson of Zeus. Zeus is the father of all Greek gods, as well as Kratos’s father. There was a great fight between the two. This resulted in Zeus dying at the hands of his son. But Zeus is not really dead, because his soul is still alive and watching Kratos' movements from Hel, the hell of Norse mythology. Zeus' death is kept a secret by Kratos, even when Zeus reenacted his fight and was seen by Atreus. Kratos was worried and made sure that Atreus didn't see anything.

6. Betrayed Athena

In God of War 3, Kratos wanted to commit suicide by using the sword of Olympus in the hope that all evil forces would be freed from his body. But Athena came and immediately pulled out the sword, she was also surprised by the stupid decision made by Kratos. But Athena returned to help Kratos to be able to release the monstrous power by forgetting all the regrets that were inside him.

But in God of War 2018, Kratos actually broke his promise with Athena. Kratos returns to being a brutal monster when he returns to using his weapon, the Blade of Chaos.

7. Had a Daughter

Atreus must not know that he had a sister. Because his father, Kratos hid the secret from him. In the previous God of War series, Kratos, who was still a human, had a daughter named Calliope. She was born from the marriage with his first wife named Lysandra while still serving in the Spartan army. As a descendant of the gods, Atreus will certainly be able to meet his sister again in Elysium, the Greek Mythology version of heaven.

8. Blade of Chaos

Blade of Chaos is Kratos' mainstay weapon in the God of War franchise. This weapon is two large twin blades created by the god of war Ares. This weapon is also equipped with a chain that is able to expand the attack range when in a battle. But this weapon has a bad past for Kratos, so he promised not to use it again. The origin of this weapon was also kept secret from Atreus, even though his son had mentioned the weapon.

9. Atreus’ Power

Since Atreus is the grandson of the god Zeus, he also has some electricity-related powers similar to his grandfather. This allows Atreus to shoot arrows with an electric current, causing more damage to the enemy.

Atreus also has talents like his father, such as superhuman strength and can run tirelessly. Atreus' archery skills are also special because Kratos doesn't have that skill. But Kratos kept it a secret from Atreus. Because he didn't want to be a burden to his son's great power.

10. Kratos’ Death

Lastly, the biggest secret that Kratos hides from Atreus is about his prediction of his death while in Jotunheim. At that time, he saw a painting on the wall depicting the journey of Atreus and Kratos which began with his meeting with Baldur until his death. But Atreus didn't get to see the end of the mural, so Kratos kept it a secret.
