For those who came from rural areas and make a living in the big city, chances are you’ll feel homesick this time of year during Ramadan. However, this year, we aren’t allowed to do Eid homecoming or mudik. Now, for those who can’t contain your feeling of homesickness, perhaps you can watch these anime series set in rural village areas instead!

1. Barakamon

Barakamon is an anime series with the appeal of rural vibes. This series follows Seishuu Handa, a Japanese calligrapher, who’s got exiled to the rural area due to a conflict with his father. In this village, he encounters Naru, a chaotic little girl who becomes Handa’s main source of inspiration.

2. Non Non Biyori

 

  • Genre: Comedy, School, Seinen, Slice of Life.

 

Another anime series set in the countryside is Non Non Biyori. This anime series tells the story of Hotaru Ichijou, a transfer student from Tokyo who moved to a remote village. 

She goes to the only school in the village -- funnily, there are only 4 other students aside from herself. Non Non Biyori focuses on the daily humor of Hotaru Ichijou, Renge Miyauchi, Natsumi Koshigaya, Komari Koshigaya, and Suguri Koshigaya.

3. Dagashi Kashi

 

  • Genre: Comedy, Shounen, Slice of Life.

 

Next, we have Dagashi Kashi. This anime follows Shikada Kokonotsu’s father’s sweet shop, which is about to be passed down to Kokonotsu. However, he refuses to inherit the business and chooses to become a mangaka instead.

One day, a girl named Shidare Hotaru visits the store and tries to persuade Kokonotsu’s father to join her family’s company.

But, Kokonotsu’s father will only accept the offer if Hotaru can convince Kokonotsu to take over the shop. Ever since then, Hotaru routinely visits the store to convince Kokonotsu.

4. Natsume Yuujinchou

 

  • Genre: Genre: Slice of Life, Demons, Supernatural, Drama, Shoujo.

 

Natsume Yuujinchou tells the story of Natsume Takashi, who has the ability to see spirits, an ability he inherited from his grandmother, Natsume Reiko. This ability made him not being able to make friends as his peers see him as a freak. Before dying, Reiko passed him a Yuujinchou (Book of Friends), which contains the names of the spirits whom Reiko brought under her control.

Yuujinchou is considered to be one of the most precious items in the spirit world, and these spirits, evil and good ones, are trying to take the book from Takashi.

Unlike her grandmother who conquered the spirits, Takashi is trying to free the spirits from the book.

5. Ano Natsu de Matteru

 

  • Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life.

 

If you’re looking for anime series with rural settings and a bit of teenage romance, Ano Natsu de Matteru is the series you’re looking for!

This series follows Ichika, a girl from outer space, looking for her ancestors on earth. Ichika’s spaceship crashes in a rural area and ends up meeting Kaito. Kaito helps Ichika since she’s enduring a serious injury.

Ichika then lives with Kaito and since then the typical teenage love triangle begins.

6. Yuru Camp

Even though it doesn’t particularly feature rural settings, the gorgeous nature in Yuru Camp reminds us of the natural vibe of our hometown. This anime series follows a group of girls who go camping in places with stunning natural views.

The story begins when Rin loves camping alone around the lake facing Mount Fuji. Then, she meets Nadeshiko, a cyclist girl who also enjoys nature.

7. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari

 

  • Genre: Slice of Life, Fantasy, Seinen.

 

Last but not least, we have another anime series with rural settings: Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari. At a glance, this anime series is quite similar to Barakamon. It follows a young man who returns to his village, taking a break from living in Tokyo.

One day, he finds a half-raccoon boy in a pot when he visits an abandoned restaurant.
