Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 8 Review

Muichiro Tokito Recalls His Past

Muichiro Tokito is a Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps and has the power of the mist breathing technique. Unfortunately, this Hashira does not remember his past at all. It was only after he met and talked with Tanjiro that Muichiro began to recall his past. This begins when he remembers Tanjiro's resemblance to his father. In episode 8, we will see flashbacks of Muichiro's past.

Muichiro begins to recall his childhood, when he would always follow his father to chopping trees. Muichiro used to enjoy helping his father. But one day, his mother fell ill. Muichiro, who was left alone with his mother, was worried, while his father went to look for herbs to save his mother. But that day, a storm came, and his father fell into a ravine while looking for herbs. That day became the day Muichiro lost his mother and father at the same time.

Muichiro Had a Twin

After being abandoned by his parents at the age of 10, it turns out that Muichiro actually had a twin brother named Yuichiro. Personality-wise, his older brother, Yuichiro, was the opposite of Muichiro. Muichiro is always happy to help others because he remembers his father's words, if you help others, it will bring goodness for yourself. However, this was strongly opposed by Yuichiro, his older brother, who lacks empathy. He would always mock Muichiro's name as he thought his younger brother could not do anything.

Muichiro's Trauma Erased His Memories

One day, when Muichiro was going to the river to fetch water, he met Miss Amane who became the wife of Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Miss Amane offered Muichiro and Yuichiro to become the swordsmen we now know as the Demon Slayer Corps. Yuichiro was against the offer, he became very angry at Muichiro who wanted the offer to help others fight demons. After that incident, Yuichiro and Muichiro stopped talking, they would only get into a fight when Miss Amane returned to offer the same offer.

At night, their house was ambushed by demons. At that time, Yuichiro tried to protect his younger brother from the devil. But alas, Yuichiro lost his arm from protecting his brother. Muichiro got enraged because the demon continued to hurt his brother. Muichiro immediately killed the demon until dawn came. The great trauma of losing his parents and older brother was the very reason why Muichiro had troubles remembering his past as he had been alone since he was 11 years old.

The Awakening of the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito

In his past, Yuichiro said the true meaning of the word "Mu" in Muichiro's name is "Mugen", which means without limits. This sparks Muichiro's awakening, as a new mark emerges on his own face. Muichiro approaches Gyokko in the hut where Haganezuka forges his sword. Gyokko notices the sign on Muichiro's face, and sees the resemblance to the one belonging to a swordsman who wore a Hanafuda earring. The mark, which looks like the shape of a cloud of mist on his face, appears when Muichiro forces himself to "go beyond" his limits. With his mist breathing technique, Muichiro's power increases and he can now match Gyokko in a fight.

Muichiro's New Sword

As Gyokko tries to break Haganezuka's concentration while forging Tanjiro's sword, Muichiro encounters Kanamori -- who forges his new sword. Muichiro receives the sword that Kanamori has just forged, following the instructions of his late swordsmith named Tetsuido. The late swordsmith was concerned if there would not be another swordsmith who could understand Muichiro's situation. Thankfully, there's Kanamori, who managed to understand Muichiro's will and made a new sword for him. Thanks to this new sword, Muichiro manages to slash Gyokko deep and even surprises the demon.
