Three Ancient China Kingdoms is truly a great source of inspiration for movies, anime, manga or even video games thanks to the popularity of the Romance of Three Kingdoms or Samkok expanding outside of China across the world. Even through different versions, experiencing the entertaining and influential story that’s based on real historical records never gets old, including the Dynasty Warriors Movie which came out this early July in 2021 on Netflix.

Based on the Hack n Slash game series from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force with the same name, Dynasty Warriors Movie really is made as faithful as possible to its source materials with every fighting scene having exciting moves like Musou skills. For more information regarding the movie, here’s the review for Dynasty Warriors Movie. Let’s get into the battle!

Dynasty Warriors Movie Synopsis, Fall of Han Dynasty and Beginning of Three Kingdoms Era

Following the game’s storyline, Dynasty Warriors Movie tells the story of Ancient China during the end of the Han Dynasty with the battle of Yellow Turban kickstarting the movie. Due to the influence of a wizard called Zhang Jiao, common citizens wreak havoc upon the entire land of China as a form of protest toward the Han Dynasty which they believe to have caused misery to their lives.

Citizens then wear a yellow turban and gather into a massive faction to cause rebellion, hence their name the Yellow Turban. At that time, Dong Zhuo is a Han Dynasty Prime Minister who attempts to suppress the rebellion by sending his army against Zhang Jiao’s Yellow Turban army whom he enhances with magic. Amidst the war, three warriors named Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei take an oath of fraternity in a peach garden and become sworn brothers in order to team up and lend a helping hand to Dong Zhuo who gets cornered by the Yellow Turban rebellion.

Leader of the rebellion and wizard Zhang Jiao easily loses at the hand of Liu Bei right at his Yellow Turban cult’s altar. Although Dong Zhuo the Prime Minister doesn’t give credit, Han Dynasty advisor Li Ru acknowledges and celebrates Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei’s victory over the Yellow Turban.

As it turns out, Dong Zhuo really is a tyrant after all the moment he dares to overthrow the Han Dynasty Emperor who at that time is still just a child and claims himself as the absolute ruler across China. To strengthen his position, he asks Lu Bu to kill his own father and become Dong Zhuo’s adopted child as well as his general to protect Dong Zhuo.

Seeing Dong Zhuo acting even more tyrannically, a Han Dynasty cavalry leader named Cao Cao plots a treason by killing Dong Zhuo in his sleep, although Lu Bu’s sudden appearance fails his mission as Lu Bu with his trusted steed Red Hare begins chasing after Cao Cao.

Due to his failure in killing Dong Zhuo, Cao Cao has to live in exile and gather as many people as possible to overthrow Dong Zhuo’s rulership. Thus, Yuan Shao forms a coalition between 12 Generals to form a rebellion toward Dong Zhuo’s governance, and at this very moment Cao Cao meets Liu Bei and Sun Jian, all three of which would cause the fall of the Han Dynasty and give birth to the legendary Three Kingdoms era.

Dynasty Warriors Movie Features Human Fireworks and Action Scenes Like Its Game Counterpart

Dynasty Warriors Movie stays true to its game counterpart by featuring fantastic battle scenes with human fireworks due to the officer characters slamming and throwing away dozens to hundreds of people to the air like fireworks, especially during colossal fights.

Curiously, Dynasty Warriors’ weapon upgrade element also appears in Dynasty Warriors Movie as Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei encounter a goddess when they get lost in a mystical forest who increases their weapon ability with the power of Musou.

To keep things as faithful to the game as possible, Dynasty Warriors Movie also utilizes fiction elements like Zhang Jiao’s magic which enhances the Yellow Turban soldiers almost like turning the into zombies, Lu Bu’s magnificent strength that can split the mountain with one move as well as many mesmerizing Musou skills to give the viewers the illusion of playing the game while watching it.

Dynasty Warriors Movie Conclusion, Anticlimactic Which Opens Room for Sequel

Dynasty Warriors Movie project is undoubtedly very ambitious and well-polished in the special effect department as well as their selection of casts, although the most obvious flaw of the movie is that it feels anticlimactic since the main focus of the story is split into two protagonists, Liu Bei and Cao Cao, in order to draw sympathy from the viewers.

Many things in the movie really toy with the viewers’ perception toward the characters like whether they should sympathize Liu Bei who stands for the people but is too ambitious and quite a liar, Cao Cao who’s firm and inspiring but also ruthless and cold-blooded as he doesn’t hesitate to cut down innocent people in his quest to protect the homeland, or even Lu Bu who’s clearly evil and overpowered but also has goodness in him as he helps marrying Diao Chan who is about to commit suicide due to a forced marriage in her village.

Speaking of that, the romance between Lu Bu and Diao Chan also seems to be rather half-hearted since the movie doesn’t depict the aftermath of their fates after the legendary Hu Lao Gate fight and it only shows a part when Diao Chan was about to marry Dong Zhuo as his father’s tactic to assassinate him. To summarize, while every scene is presented very well, many aspects of the story feel anticlimactic as the movie doesn’t conclude every conflict and it deliberately leaves things unresolved, hence why the Dynasty Warriors Movie desperately needs a sequel.

That sums up the review of the Dynasty Warriors Movie, a film about the Three Kingdoms that looks similar to its game counterpart. If you have other opinions regarding the movie, let us know in the comment section below!
