Last October 2020 GameSir announced a new controller called GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller. Yup, as the name implies, this new controller from GameSir is intended for those of you who want to experience a different mobile game experience. Moreover, this is the newest product from GameSir and is said to have several interesting advantages.

There are many types of gamepads or mobile controllers on the market today, but not all of them have very interesting innovations to glance at. Answering this, GameSir finally brought up the GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller, which offers an innovation at a price that is still quite affordable.

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is popular because it can run the Nintendo Switch emulator, Egg-NS. But the writer won’t mention that topic further here, because this article is about the gamepad and how well it performs on several Android games.

Fortunately, the writer got the opportunity to try GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller firsthand. What is the product like, and is the product worth owning? See the full review from the writer after using it for one week.

Unboxing

The box of GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is different from other GameSir boxes. The box feels sturdier and dominated by the color red and grey at the front. It fits the color scheme of the gamepad. The box of GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller will remind you of Nintendo Switch’s box, but smaller.

Opening the box you will find, one unit of GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller, the manual book, and GameSir sticker. Those are the items you get from the box, there’s no cable or other stuff included in the box.

Design

Speaking of the design, GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller looks almost like a pair of Switch Joy-Con because it has the same button configuration. Like in Switch, there’s no standard d-pad buttons.

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is made out of white and black plastic. But the joysticks got different colors, red and blue. At the back, you will see rubber grips on both sides to help you get comfortable when using the gamepad.

It may look minimalistic, but the buttons of GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller are good. From the ABXY buttons to the triggers are perfectly balanced between clicks and touches. This allows a better input for the smartphone. For a sensation that mimics a console’s controller, the L2 and R2 buttons are slightly curved so it’s comfortable for your finger and the edges are designed to be rounded to make it easier to be held for a long time.

The L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons feel clicky like a mouse. It provides good feedback after being pressed. There are several shortcut buttons, such as One-Click Screenshot, Home, and S and G  buttons that can be customized.

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is not heavy, so your hands won’t get tired of holding it for too long. The area where you will place your smartphone is covered with high-quality rubber. It seems like the rubber won’t easily peel overtime.

On the left, you will see a USB Type-C that can go up and down. It’s a helpful feature so you can easily unplug your smartphone. This is a great innovation by GameSir because the gamepad from other brands has a stationary USB Type-C port making it feel stiff and may lead to the user accidentally breaking the port.

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller got a big dimension, so you can use a smartphone like Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Unfortunately, the user uses ROG Phone 2 and it doesn’t fit inside GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller. The dimension of ROG Phone 2 is too big, if being forced then it may break the springs of the gamepad.

Additionally, make sure to remove your smartphone case when you are using GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller so you can easily install your smartphone inside the controller.

Feature

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller brings unique features that other gamepad lacks. This gamepad uses USB Type-C that is being used on a lot of Android flagship smartphones. The port allows minimum delay for a better gaming experience.

The movable USB Type-C up to 51-degree range makes it easier for the user to plug or unplug their smartphone. The screenshot button helps you take an in-game screenshot and it’s supported by the GameSir World app.

Power and Compatibility

GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller doesn’t have a battery. Instead, it consumes the battery of your smartphone. Because of the lack of battery, the gamepad also doesn’t have Bluetooth connectivity. The only way to use this gamepad is by plugging your smartphone into the USB Type-C port.

At first, this may sound like a lousy idea, but this gamepad only need 2mAh of power to work. But, not all smartphones let out that big of power. Only several mid-range and flagship models can power this gamepad.

The writer uses Realme Narzoo 20, and this smartphone is not powerful enough to powerup GameSir X2. to solve the issue, the writer plugs in a power bank to the USB port on the gamepad to power it up. Thankfully, the gamepad works well. But, it’s not the same case when you are using a smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra.

Additionally, GameSir X2 is compatible with Android smartphones. The gamepad won’t work if you use an Apple smartphone.

How to Connect It

Connecting GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is easy. First, place the smartphone in the middle and plug the USB Type-C. Then make sure that the grip secures your smartphone from shaking or falling when being used.

If your smartphone can let out 2mAh of power, then the gamepad will automatically connect and the blue light on the right side will light up. For an improved experience, the user can download the GameSir World app from PlayStore

>> Download GameSir World on Android

With the app, you can find out the list of games that supports GameSir X2. The writer has tried the recommended games and they all work perfectly fine. But, if you want to play games such as PUBG Mobile, CoD Mobile, and Mobile Legends, you have to download a third-party app named Octopus. With Octopus, you can remap the buttons. You can also automatically remap the buttons with the app.

Verdict

After using GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller for one week, the writer can say that the gamepad is really comfortable to use. The material of the gamepad is not cheap and it’s quite innovative because of the rubber grip at the back that avoids slipping.

The connectivity is almost instant making the gamepad very reliable. The user doesn’t have to turn on Bluetooth or other stuff to connect the gamepad to their smartphone. The USB Type-C port innovation gives great comfort because you don’t have to worry about plugging or unplugging your smartphone from the gamepad.

The characteristic of GameSir gamepad is the trigger button that sounds like a mouse. So using the gamepad doesn’t quite feel like using a Switch Joy-Con. Still, it responds well and the delay is kept to a minimum.

Another advantage of GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller is the Cloud gaming support, such as Microsoft's xCloud, Google's stadia, Vortex, and more. The gamepad can automatically connect and run games from Cloud.

The downside of this gamepad is the fact that it can’t be used on a smartphone that can let out 2mAh of power via USB TYpe-C. If you are considering getting this gamepad, make sure that your smartphone supports it, although you can fix this by connecting the gamepad to a power bank.

The gamepad also lacks a vibrating motor. So using this gamepad will not be as immersive. Also, make sure to measure the size of your phone because ROG Phone 2 can’t fit inside this gamepad.

At a price of Rp1.020.000, is the GameSir X2 Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller worth buying? The answer is it depends on what you need. Function-wise, it works like other GameSir gamepad that is sold at a lower price. This gamepad has its benefits and selling point. Not the mention the gamepad became popular because it can run Switch emulator.
