Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a nostalgia cure for gamers, but is it worth owning? Find out the answer here.

Rockstar Games has finally released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Rockstar Games Launcher. This game contains three classic GTA games that have been "upgraded" namely Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

However, on the launch day, PC gamers are upset because they can't play it right away even though they have bought it.

Since Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has just been released on Rockstar Games Launcher, the game was unplayable for more than 15 hours! Therefore, PC gamers who have pre-ordered the game feel disappointed because they can’t play the game.

Fortunately, the author had the opportunity to review Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition PC version from Rockstar Games. After being patient enough, the author was finally able to play this game on PC and started the first nostalgic adventure through the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, then Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto III.

After playing the three series, here is the author's review of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition PC version that might help you decide if you have to buy the game or not.

Nostalgic Storyline With No Changes

The author does not need to tell what the storyline of this game is like. If you are a big GTA fan, you must be very familiar with the journey of CJ and the Grove Street Family (GSF) gang in San Andreas. Next is the story of Mafia member Forelli, Tommy Vercetti, and finally the story of a criminal named Claude who has to do "dirty work" to earn money.

Because the author has played all three of the GTA series, then playing the Definitive Edition is like reminiscing. What's more, the story has not been changed, so the author is only really presented with changes in graphics.

Graphics Upgrade That is Subpar

As a veteran gamer who had played the three original series on PC and PS2, the author feels that the Definitive Edition version has gotten a pretty good graphic improvement. However, compared to GTA IV or GTA V, the Definitive Edition is definitely below both games.

Even so, the author really enjoyed completing every mission that was presented and completing the storylines of GTA Definitive Edition. The author understands that Rockstar Games does not want to erase the originality of the three series, so they still maintain all assets and just try to polish it to make it look smoother.

Of course, it's impossible to expect a graphics upgrade like GTA IV or GTA V, because rebuilding the game will definitely cost a lot of money. No wonder Rockstar Games appointed Groves Street Games to work on the Definitive Edition.

If you want to develop something special, Rockstar Games should appoint a number of studios under its auspices, such as Rockstar North or Rockstar San Diego. But the author thinks that the main studio is working on a special project that is still being kept secret by Rockstar Games. So they appointed Grove Street Games who worked on the Bully Anniversary Edition for mobile devices.

Therefore, the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in the first week was filled with complaints of various kinds of bugs and errors that went viral on social media. Many are disappointed with the overhaul made by Grove Street Games to the three GTA series. This led to negative reviews given by gamers to the three versions of the Definitive Edition.

The author also found bugs and felt that the graphics update was not fitting. However, the author understands that only one studio is working on the three series. Although Grove Street Games studio does specialize in enhancing and porting games, to do so in all three games at once requires a lot of effort. Moreover, the porting work is usually done within a short deadline, so there are few things that are overlooked before being released in full.

Still Decent on Potato PC

The author has a decent PC, but was surprised enough when the PC can run Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Because the three games can run smoothly without any problems, even frame drops. The author uses an AMD A10-7850K processor PC specification coupled with a GTX 750 Ti, 8 GB of RAM. The author tries to tamper with the graphic settings starting from low, medium, high and ultra while still setting it to 60 FPS. The result? Games run fine with no frame rate drops.

With these settings, the author plays at a resolution of 1366x768, even with high graphics settings, GTA Definitive Edition runs very smoothly. After playing the game for a while, the second thing to note besides the "nice" graphics of this game is the controls. Controlling with the keyboard and mouse, especially the gamepad, is equally fun, there is no awkwardness at all. Especially for those of you who often play GTA V, because the author thinks that it has a similar feeling.

Not only does the control system feel lighter, the music and voice actors are also better. The author feels that the resulting sound becomes more detailed and feels very clear, so the author is quite amazed by the sound of the three GTA series.

Same Bugs

Who would have thought that the bug that used to be in the original GTA San Andreas was also in The Definitive Edition version. Flying car bugs with monster trucks, tear gas bugs, walking bugs or using vehicles in the sea, bugs in the gym, first mission bug where if you kill a ballast member you won't be chased again by red cars, and many other phenomenal bugs that you can “enjoy” here. But this seems to have become a "feature", yes, no longer a bug.

Modder Support

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition might be a disappointing game released by Rockstar Games. Starting from the graphics that feel less than optimal, annoying bugs, release delays for the PC version, and so on. But behind that, these three games still get great support from modders. The bothersome rain on GTA III can be fixed by nodders. It didn't stop there, modders also saved their favorite game by making a mod that fixed the texture problems in the game. This proves that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is still loved even though it has received insults after insults from gamers.

The author himself estimates that Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will still continue to improve, with the support of modders to make it look cooler than the original version.

Verdict

Rockstar Games had said at the beginning when they announced Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that in terms of graphics, the game will experience improvements that are adapted to today's technology. However, it will still retain its classic elements. Well if that’s what they meant then this is the result.

The GTA Definitive Edition is indeed disappointing because they do not match expectations to have a character look like the GTA V characters. But behind that, Rockstar Games chose to maintain the design so that it still looks like the original. Even so, gamers can still feel the improved graphics quality through better textures and lighting than the original version.

Although the price is not cheap, the author leaves it entirely to GTA fans. Whether the price is expensive or normal, if it's expensive maybe you can wait until Rockstar Games gives a discount for the game.

If the author has to give a rating, it seems that a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars is enough to represent the author's enjoyment when playing this game again.

In addition to PC, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is also available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch. Do not forget that this game will be available on mobile (iOS and Android) in early 2022.
