After screened for several days, Joker movie becomes a topic of discussion by DC fans and people in general. Many people praise this movie by Todd Phillips, but not a little who pout this. Understandably, the expectation for Joker movie is very high, even it is said as one of many films that deserve an Oscar nomination long before being released.

How Joker Persona Created

Joker movie runs for 122 minutes or 2 hours 2 minutes, where it tells about a man named Arthur Fleck who ended up being Joker. He’s a comedian who fails in his career, so he becomes a revolutionary icon in his era. This thing also makes us know how a decent man can be evil in a short time. Arthur must face pressure by pressure in his life until, in the end, he decides to become Joker.

In Joker movie is back serving a dark and depressing nuance, where the event sets around 80s. In this era, Gotham city is under an economical crisis that is resulting in many social problems; starting from neglected garbage problems and many jobless due to the minimum of the job vacancy. This also makes many people have brutal behavior and lawless. It is added with a large gap between rich and poor, resulting in hatred for the rich by the poor.

Meanwhile, Arthur Fleck is a man from a lowlife class who has to work hard to survive. He works as a clown to entertain children, but due to the harsh of the streets of Gotham makes Fleck receives a bad treatment from people around him.

Arthur’s life becomes harder when he gets fired from his job. Arthur’s mental condition also worsens when he finds a letter written by his mother to Thomas Wayne - father of Bruce Wayne or Batman in the future. Rather happy, Arthur is furious and shocked. Pressure by pressure he experiences drives him ‘crazy’, he responds to his pains by laughing.

Arthur realizes that the life he lived in is a comedy, not a tragedy that must be faced continuously. In the end, he doesn’t feel anything, because his feelings are dead. With his numb feeling and all the madness he has, Arthur becomes a Joker and eventually becomes an icon for low life people.

Joaquin Phoneix’s Astounding Performances

At the beginning of the movie, audiences will be taken to sympathize with Arthur Fleck’s condition. But, as the film progresses, audiences will know that there’s something wrong with him. Even though the pacing is slow, but director Todd Phillips manages to serve Arthur’s life journey and makes audiences go complacent seeing his journey.

Phoenix, who acts as Arthur Fleck, also successfully creating the Joker persona who is very mad, mentally ill, and senseless. But, he’s also able to bring audiences to feel the same pain he experiences before transforming into Joker.

It also shown that Phoenix is also very nimble in dancing, his signature walk, how he smokes and running gesture is very suitable for Joker’s persona with a nickname called “The Dancing Clown”. It’s very different with Joker played Heath Ledger, Phoenix’s Joker is a never seen Joker in the silver screen.

Verdict

Joker movie manages to describe the perfect Antihero. With a solid story, dark atmosphere, superb cinematography, immersing acting, chilling yet eerie soundtracks that can switch the tone, audiences are like falling under Phoenix, and Phillip’s hypnotize. But to watch Joker movie is not easy as watching a typical movie, where this movie is separated from DCEU (DC Extended Universe) timeline — resulting in that this movie is not connected with other DC movies at any kind. Also, this movie is straightforward to understand if you’re a long-time fan of DC, for those who aren’t, you may be confused with the story.

Without taking from any source from the comic book, Joker manages to give an outstanding show. This movie is excellent, full of meaning, as well as playing tricks with your mind. With his hard endeavor, Phoenix struggles with all he has to make Joker into life, even he accepts to transforms his body shape from an overweight middle-aged man to a skinny man with schizophrenia

Surely this Joker movie gives us an understanding that massive pressure can transform someone very quickly. Besides, this movie also gives a bright spot for DC’s future to develop Batman’s franchise that has specific potential.
