The Grand Blue manga, by Kenji Inoue (writer) and Kimitake Yoshioka (illustrator), is one of the comedy titles that has successfully stolen the attention of manga lovers since it was first published in 2014. Set in the coastal town of Izu, this manga tells the story of the adventures of Iori Kitahara, a new student who moves to the town to attend college and lives in his uncle's diving equipment rental shop, Grand Blue.
At first, readers might think that this is a manga about ocean diving with a relaxed and educational feel. However, in just the first few pages, Grand Blue immediately shows its main identity as an absurd comedy manga full of silliness and adult humor.
Iori, who initially intended to live a "normal" college life, is instead dragged into the crazy circle of the Peek a Boo diving club. Instead of focusing on diving activities, this club is more often filled with drinking parties, silly fights, and events that violate all expectations of the ideal college life.
One of Grand Blue's main strengths is the balance between extreme slapstick visuals and witty dialogues that poke fun at college life. The exaggerated expressions of the characters, especially when angry, embarrassed, or drunk, are a very entertaining characteristic. Kimitake Yoshioka's illustrations are very detailed and able to convey emotions in a very dramatic way, which only adds to the ridiculousness of the situation.
Although dominated by humor, Grand Blue does not completely abandon meaningful story elements. Friendship, self-discovery, and youthful freedom remain the common thread that connects each chapter. Even when the diving scene finally appears, readers will be faced with stunning underwater visuals and a peaceful nuance that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of the characters' campus lives.
However, it should be noted that the humor in Grand Blue is often adult in nature and may not be suitable for everyone. Some scenes and jokes tend to be explicit, although they are still within the bounds of a seinen comedy genre.
Overall, Grand Blue is a manga that offers laughs and surprises on every page. For comedy lovers who don't mind a little wild humor, this manga is a must-read that won't disappoint.
