Ichi the Witch or Madan no Ichi is a fantasy manga by author Osamu Nishi known for his manga Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun and illustrator Shiro Usazaki known for his manga Act-Age. The series began publishing in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine on September 9, 2024 and is available in English via Manga Plus by Shueisha.
In the world of Ichi the Witch, magical creatures called Majik roam the world and can only be defeated by female witches after passing certain trials. However, Ichi, a young hunter from Druid Mountain, accidentally defeats one of the Majik and becomes the first male witch in history. His presence shakes up the order of the magical world that has always been dominated by women.
Ichi is the main protagonist who grew up in the wild after being abandoned by his parents. He has a sharp hunting instinct and a "die for the sake of dying" principle that he applies in hunting Majik. After defeating Majik Uroro, Ichi gains magical powers and is recruited by Desscaras to join the Majik hunting team that endangers humans.
Desscaras is a wizard known as the "Abyssal Wizard", he is the strongest wizard who originally worked alone. After being saved by Ichi, he formed a team with Ichi and Kumugi to fight the Majik who hate humans. Desscaras has an emotional connection with Ichi because he reminds him of his deceased younger brother.
The illustrations by Shiro Usazaki feature sharp details and dynamic panels that enhance the atmosphere of the dark and mysterious magical world. Usazaki's art style, previously known for Act-Age, once again captivates readers with strong and expressive character designs.
The narrative written by Osamu Nishi combines elements of action, fantasy, and psychology with a storyline that challenges gender norms in the world of magic. This combination creates a story that is fresh and interesting for both shōnen and seinen readers.
Ichi the Witch has received praise from critics and readers alike. ComicBook.com's Nick Valdez called it "the strongest series since Kagurabachi" and has great potential to be another hit. Screen Rant's Joshua Fox praised the world-building, art, and protagonist.
This manga is officially available for free through the Manga Plus platform by Shueisha.
With a unique premise, deep characters, and stunning illustrations, Ichi the Witch offers a different reading experience and is well worth following for fans of fantasy and action manga.
