Gadget | 29 July
Razer, a manufacturer known for specializing in gaming devices, recently introduced their newest wireless earphones, the Hammerhead True Wireless. This product is the second generation of the original TWS Razer Hammerhead True Wireless which was released in 2019.
In this 2nd generation, the latest TWS created by Razer brings a number of new features that were not found in the first generation. Some of the improvements include Razer Chroma RGB, active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth 5.2, up to 32.5 hours of battery life, and more.
Coincidentally, the writer had the opportunity to review the TWS gaming from Razer for several weeks. After using it for a while, here are some reviews that might help you before buying. Let's look at the following together.
Unboxing
Razer, which is synonymous with the green and black color combination, maintains this signature in their TWS packaging. Razer's packaging is always sturdy and well-maintained, using resilient materials to prevent damage.
The front of the box displays the product image emblazoned with various features and the brand logo. Meanwhile, the back of the box features a product diagram explaining its features as well as detailing the size of the earbuds and charging case. The contents of the box include:
- TWS Razer Hammerhead True Wireless 2nd Gen
- 1.5m long USB-A to USB-C cable
- Charging box
- Set of silicone ear tips (sizes S and L)
- Thank you note
- Razer Sticker
- Guidebook
Speaking of ear-tips, size M is built into the earbuds by default. If you feel uncomfortable or don't fit the shape of your ear canal, Razer provides the option to change the ear tips to your liking. The author himself feels that the M size has provided optimal comfort and sound coverage.
Calm Design
As a TWS earphone, of course the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless (Generation 2) is equipped with a charging case. This casing is designed with a rounded shape at the corners. The bottom is flattened so that the casing can be placed in an upright position or standing on a level plane. This casing material is made of plastic with a matte finish.
The closing hinges are sturdy and don't experience undue rattling when opened or closed. Like most TWS earphones, this charging case cover has an active mechanism. This means that when opened, the earphones will immediately be in pairing mode and ready to be connected to a smart device such as a smartphone.
If the charging case is closed and the earphones are in it, the earphones will automatically turn off. There is an LED indicator on the front that shows the battery status and pairing process. At the bottom is a USB-C port for charging the case.
Unlike the case, the wireless earphones come with glossy plastic, not matte. The stem of these earphones is round and long, with the charging terminal at the bottom of the stem. The microphone is also located at the bottom of this stem, used for functions such as ANC and making voice calls.
These earphones use an in-ear design, namely with a silicone tip that is inserted into the ear. Several pairs of silicone ear tips of various sizes are included in the sales package. This allows you to choose the size that best fits your ear size. The right size will isolate outside sound effectively. When fitted, the silicone ear tips form an ellipse, providing optimal comfort when worn in the ear.
Razer Audio Attractive Features
The RGB LED light area on the left or right earphone is equipped with a touch sensor that allows you to control ANC features, music playback, voice calls, and more. By default, you can tap the sensor area 1x to access play/pause, tap 2x for next song, tap 3x to repeat song, hold for 2 seconds to access ANC / Ambient mode, and more.
You can change these default access settings by adjusting them through personal preferences. The trick is to use the Razer Audio application. After downloading and installing the application, select the 'Remap' option. Here there will be many options for setting playback access preferences up to calls.
Apart from that, the Razer Audio application also allows you to set the equalizer. This equalizer is available in preset form (Amplified, Default, Enhanced Bass, Enhanced Clarity, Vocal) and also manual settings by selecting the 'Custom' option. There are 10 adjustable frequencies ranging from 31 Hz to 16 kHz.
You can see the remaining battery for each earphone as a percentage. But, unfortunately, the app does not display the battery percentage for the charging case. On the other hand, the Razer Audio application also allows you to set ANC and Ambient modes. This allows TWS to block outside sounds or switch to transparent mode so you can hear ambient sounds more easily.
You can also change this lighting using the Razer Chroma RGB application which can be downloaded on the Android and iOS platforms. After downloading it, you can change the color of the RGB lights in the Razer Audio app by selecting 'Chroma Effect'.
There are several types of LED lighting effects on the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless (Generation 2). The light effect options in this menu include Audio Meter, Breathing, Spectrum, Static. You can also adjust the brightness level of the lights via the LED Brightness Adjustment slider. Also available is a choice of colors for lighting effects.
Usage Experience
As a wireless device, Bluetooth 5.2 is the main support in connecting these earbuds to other devices. This wireless Bluetooth can connect to devices that are about 5-6 meters from the earbuds.
When used, the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless 2nd Gen shows significant improvements in terms of latency. Gaming Mode only hits around 60ms. For playing competitive mobile games such as Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, and COD Mobile, it feels minimal latency. But keep in mind, so that you first activate the Game Mode feature in the Razer Audio application.
Even so, without activating Game Mode it feels quite enough to listen to music, the resulting input lag is meaningless because it is almost imperceptible.
However, the advantage of these earbuds is the ANC or Active Noise Cancellation feature which successfully isolates outside noise or distractions. With active ANC, these earbuds are perfect for use when doing outdoor activities such as running or taking the MRT while watching videos on TikTok.
In terms of sound quality, this second generation is not too different from its predecessor. The sound produced by the 10mm earbuds drivers is quite stunning. Low sound frequencies are displayed clearly with a good level of background instrument cleanliness. Meanwhile, on the treble side, these earbuds are capable of producing a sound comparable to bass. These TWS earbuds also support SBC and AAC Codecs.
When used to play competitive games, even though the input lag is quite pronounced, these earbuds are quite reliable in detecting the sound of enemy steps or shots. For example, when playing Apex Legends and being in a multi-storey building, the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless 2nd gen will provide accurate information on the position of enemy steps. So, we can chase enemies and collaborate with teammates.
Regarding the microphone, these earbuds have an Omnidirectional pick-up pattern, which means they can pick up sound from all directions. Although not as sharp as a condenser microphone like the AT2020, for two-way communication via a smartphone, these Razer earbuds are quite reliable.
Conclusion
The 2nd generation Razer Hammerhead True Wireless, which was launched in 2021, is not left behind with the latest features such as ANC, which is very useful when outdoors. If you are the owner of the first generation and plan to upgrade, of course you will feel a lot of differences, both from the appearance of the earbuds which now support Razer Chroma RGB, to the design of the charging case which is more modern even though it is similar to many competitors.
In addition, this 2nd generation is equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, longer duration of use, and still supports SBC & AAC Codecs. Another difference is the increase in latency between the first and second generations. So, when used for competitive games, the audio delay that is presented is actually better than the first generation, of course by activating the Game Mode available on the Razer Audio application.
Currently, the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless 2021 (2nd Gen) is priced around IDR 1,225,000. This is a promo price from the normal price at launch of IDR 2,199,000!
