Roblox age verification has become one of the most searched topics after Roblox introduced a new face-based age verification system and communication rules restricted by age groups. These changes mark a major step in strengthening user safety, especially for minors who make up the majority of Roblox’s player base.
The update was announced as a continuation of the system rollout from September and began gradual implementation on November 18, 2025. Roblox is now the first online gaming platform to require age verification before granting access to communication features. Through this new approach, the company aims to set a higher safety standard for digital spaces that were previously accessible to users of all ages without clear restrictions.
Roblox Age Verification: Facial Scan Required to Access Chat
The Roblox age verification process is done directly through the app using the player’s device camera. The technology, known as Facial Age Estimation, allows Roblox to determine the user’s approximate age before granting access to chat features, both in-game and outside gameplay.
Roblox explains that the process is fast and designed with privacy protection in mind. Images and videos used for verification are processed by Persona as the official partner and deleted once the process is complete. Roblox ensures that no biometric data is stored on its servers.
This policy began its global rollout on November 18. By the first week of December, age verification requirements started becoming mandatory in countries such as Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. By early January, the rule will apply to every market where communication features are active.
Roblox considers this proactive approach essential to creating a safe digital environment. This was emphasized by Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman. “Every day, we work to deliver safe, positive, and age-appropriate experiences for more than 150 million users on Roblox,” he said.
Roblox Age Groups: New Classification to Regulate Interaction
Once age verification is completed, players are placed into one of six Roblox age groups: U9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. These groups form the basis of communication restrictions.
With this classification, players can only chat with users in similar age ranges. Older users cannot initiate conversations with younger players, especially where the age gap is significant. This system is intended to reduce the risk of harmful interactions between adults and minors.
Roblox provides clearer examples to help players understand the new rules:
-
A user estimated to be 12 years old can only chat with users aged 15 or younger.
-
An 18-year-old player may interact with users aged 16 and older, and may add a younger sibling as a Trusted Connection as long as they are at least 13.
-
For players under nine years old, in-game chat is disabled by default and can only be enabled with parental approval after age verification.
Roblox Age Verification Chat: New Communication Rules In and Out of Game
The Roblox age verification chat system is the core of this update. After chat features are tied to age groups, Roblox sets different communication rules for users under 13 and adult players.
For players under 13:
-
In-game chat is only active with parental approval.
-
Off-game chat has stricter limitations, especially when interacting with users whose age estimation is significantly older.
For adult players:
-
They may only communicate with age groups considered safe under the system.
-
Adults cannot initiate conversations with younger players.
In Indonesia, users under 13 face an additional requirement: age verification can only be completed after parents approve the process through an email sent by the system. Parents can also adjust their child’s account settings at any time through the Parental Controls menu.
Roblox Age Verification System
Roblox outlines the facial verification steps directly in the app to make the process easier:
-
Open the Roblox app and select the age verification menu.
-
Grant camera access.
-
Follow the instructions to align your face in the center of the screen, then turn left and right.
-
Wait for analysis, after which the system will determine your age group.
After the scan is complete, players immediately see which Roblox age group they fall into and what communication limits apply. Depending on the region, users may also verify their age using official identification documents.
Impact of the Roblox Age Policy on Players
Since early 2025, Roblox has released more than 145 safety updates. The implementation of Roblox age verification and age-based chat restrictions is part of a layered safety strategy that includes AI-driven analysis, mature-content filtering, external link control, and enhanced parental tools.
With this breakthrough, Roblox aims to reduce the risk of inappropriate interactions on a platform that now has more than 150 million monthly active users. The company also launched a Safety Center to educate parents and guardians about Roblox safety features.
This initiative highlights Roblox’s ambition to set a new industry standard for creating a secure and age-appropriate digital environment.
