The longest running anime is actually Sazae-san, who has most likely escaped the attention of most fans in this world. The reason is, this anime series has been airing for more than five decades, and continues to grow.

What is Sazae-san? What Kind of Anime Is It?

Sazae-san began in April 1946 as a four-panel comic strip (yonkoma) by pioneering female mangaka, Machiko Hasegawa. It debuted in the local newspaper, the Fukunichi Shinbun, before being taken over three years later by the Asahi Shinbun until 1974. Yonkoma managed to release around 6,500 strips.

The series was adapted as an anime series starting in 1969, and has been airing on Japanese television ever since. The anime airs three eight-minute episodes each week. Currently Sazae-san has 7.881 episodes, but that number keeps increasing.

Sazae-san is not only the longest-running anime, but also the longest-running animated series. The record was achieved in 2013 and is registered with the Guinness World Records. This is an achievement that probably no other series will ever surpass.

What Is the Plot Like?

Sazae-san follows the daily life of Sazae Fugata, a housewife in her mid-twenties and her beloved family consisting of her husband, parents, son, younger siblings and a pet cat.

Sazae-san was meant to embody what Hasegawa-sensei hoped to be a traditional Japanese family after World War II. For that, Sazae herself was more interested in horseback riding than doing what women of that era expected to attract husbands.

When she married, she tended to rule over her husband, which the neighbors found uncommon. Sazae-san is also known to never age even after the series has been airing for years.

Sazae-san is a simple comedy anime series, but has a depiction of Japanese life from the time period they take. It represents an ancient but progressive viewpoint from the past, before the social changes brought about by modern technology.
