In SBS One Piece volume 24, a fan asked that in volume 18, precisely at chapter 157, Luffy complained that the ship’s run out of food, despite he’s standing at the front of the orange tree that is full of fruits and can be easily picked, by why Luffy didn’t eat it? 

According to Oda, normal people can survive until a week without food if it has a big spirit while picking Nami’s fruit is the same as knocking on death’s door. That’s why Luffy won’t dare to touch the tree, he’s rather starving while waiting for other foods rather than picking Nami’s oranges.
