Through the official Twitter account for the light novel series Demon Lord, Retry! (Mao-sama, Retry!) by Kurone Kanzaki, on Monday, August 21st 2023, it was announced that a sequel manga entitled Demon Lord, Retry! R which Kanzaki co-wrote with Amaru Minotake will be adapted into an anime.

Minotake launched the manga Demon Lord, Retry! R on Futabasha's Gaugau Monster website and app in March 2020. Futabasha published the sixth compiled volume on January 13th 2023 and the seventh volume is scheduled to ship on August 30th 2023.

Demon Lord, Retry has had a total of 1.9 million copies in circulation. The light novel series inspired the first anime series adaptation which premiered in July 2019.

The original story revolves around Akira Ono, a man who works at a company that manages online games. He often plays the game as his character "Mao" (Dark Lord). One day, when he logs into the game, he is transported to a fantasy world of the game as the character.

There, he meets a girl who only has one leg, and begins his adventure with her. However, because he was a powerful "Dark Lord", various countries and holy maidens came to defeat him, and he instead caused trouble wherever he was.

Kanzaki began publishing the story on the "Shosetsuka ni Narō" (Let's Become a Novelist) website from October to December 2016. Later, he published a side story chapter that was not connected to the main story in September 2018.

Futabasha began publishing the story in light novel volumes with illustrations by Koji Ogata in June 2017. Futabasha also began reprinting the novels through the M Novels label with new illustrations by illustrator and animator Makoto Iino. The company published the eighth volume in November 2021, and the ninth volume is scheduled for publication on September 29th 2023.

Amaru Minotake launched a manga adaptation of the story in October 2017 on Futabasha's Comic Action Website. The fifth and final volume shipped in Japan in December 2019.
