The news of ONIC's new Gold Laner, Duane "Kelra" Pillas, came as quite a surprise to many MLBB Esports fans in Indonesia. Why not? ONIC already boasts two talented Gold Lane players: Schevenko "Skylar" Tendean and Clayton "Savero" Kuswanto. Kelra's arrival raises a big question: where are Skylar and Savero? Is Skylar possibly taking a break after the M7 World Championship?
Naturally, the welcoming event held by ONIC management at the ONIC Super Training Facility in Meruya, West Jakarta, answered various questions circulating among fans and the media. Management, represented by CEO Justin Widjaja, Vice President of Esports Denver "Yeb" Miranda, and Head of Esports Ahmad Marsam "Mars" Fakhre, provided a detailed explanation of their roster for MPL Indonesia Season 17.
ONIC Management Announces Skylar Taking a Break from MPL ID Season 17, Coach Yeb and CEO Provide Explanation
For your information, Skylar's presence with ONIC during the MPL ID Season 16 had a significant impact. They even won the MPL ID Season 16 title and the Games of the Future 2025 international title in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, UAE. Skylar also represented Indonesia with ONIC at the M7 World Championship. However, Skylar's journey with ONIC was quite bumpy and challenging. Despite qualifying for the knockout stage, ONIC fell to Alter Ego and dropped to the Lower Bracket before being sent home by Team Liquid PH.
This failure was a major blow and a significant step forward. Rumors of Kelra's presence fueled the theory that Skylar's break would happen again. Skylar's break is nothing new, considering that after the M6 World Championship with RRQ Hoshi, he also decided to take a season off. Skylar's decision to take a break will certainly raise questions, but ultimately, ONIC management had to make a bold decision.
During the welcoming ceremony for Kelra held by ONIC Esports management, Coach Yeb revealed that Skylar was taking a break for the upcoming MPL ID Season 17. However, Coach Yeb and CEO Justin Widjaja stated that Skylar's decision to take a break was primarily due to family reasons, and that Skylar had discussed this with management to confirm the decision.
"My announcement is that Skylar will be taking a break for next season. But as for the reason, please ask Skylar," said Coach Yeb. Echoing Coach Yeb's statement, CEO Justin Widjaja said, "Perhaps (added to Coach Yeb's statement), it's more like we've talked with Skylar about his decision to take a break this coming season. We don't know how long it will be yet, but it could be something like Coach Yeb said for personal reasons, or you can ask Skylar about it," Justin Widjaja added.
"But we can assume it's because he's married. Or perhaps it's because of his very busy schedule, a full half-year bootcamp at ONIC, so we really appreciate whatever his decision is. And Skylar will remain a part of ONIC. It doesn't mean he's taking a break and leaving ONIC," he said.
Skylar Taking a Break Isn't New Thing in the Indonesian MLBB Competitive Scene
As explained previously, Skylar taking a break isn't new in the Indonesian MLBB competitive scene. When he was still with RRQ Hoshi, Skylar also decided to take a break for a season, specifically during MPL ID Season 15. He conveyed this decision to management, coaches, and analysts. Even Team RRQ CEO Andrian "AP" Pauline agreed and gave Skylar permission to take a break from the competitive scene.
During his break, he did a variety of activities, but mostly spent re-streaming MPL games or playing together with other current and former pro MLBB players. Referring to what was conveyed by ONIC CEO, Justin Widjaja, it is true that Skylar's agenda for the past few days has been quite busy, so he believes that taking a break or taking a break is Skylar's right and of course, he is still part of the ONIC team.
