Sabo is the number 2 man in the Revolutionary Army after Dragon. Before that, there was his own story of how he joined the Revolutionary Army and met other members. In the SBS One Piece volume 80, a reader is curious about how Sabo, Koala, and Hack met for the first time.

Following the question, Oda replied that Sabo was helped by Dragon when he was about 10 years old. He then met the Revolutionary Army and learned about what happened to the world until Sabo sympathized with them.

That's when Sabo met Hack, a Fishman Karate master who teaches self-defense to unlucky children raised by the group. Despite not remembering anything, Sabo showed great ability and amazingly fast growth under Dragon's upbringing.

When Sabo was 13 years old, a 14-year-old girl named Koala was taken in by Hack and joined the Revolutionary Army. Koala took Fishman-style Karate lessons under Hack and eventually became an assistant master. Hack and Koala, along with Sabo, were assigned to the mission as a team because of their good relationship and cooperation. That's how the three met and became a team in the Revolutionary Army.
