Superman Fantastic Four isn’t just a pairing of two major names from rival publishers—it actually happened in a spectacular crossover comic released in April 1999. Titled Superman/Fantastic Four #1, this one-shot was a collaboration between DC Comics and Marvel Comics, presenting an epic storyline called The Infinite Destruction.
Superman Fantastic Four: When Two Superhero Icons Appeared in the Same Comic
In the story, a mysterious object crashes in the middle of Metropolis. Superman arrives to investigate and discovers it's a nuclear bomb. After disabling the device, he's confronted by a crystal projecting an image of his father, Jor-El. The message reveals that the real cause of Krypton’s destruction was Galactus, the cosmic entity from the Marvel Universe.
Fearing that Galactus may come for Earth next, Superman seeks help from the Fantastic Four—Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm. But during their investigation of the crystal, it unleashes an energy surge that infects Pier Four’s technology, turning it hostile.
Things escalate when Hank Henshaw, a.k.a. Cyborg Superman, appears and reveals that the crystal was a trap crafted by Galactus to turn Superman into his new Herald. Superman is infused with the Power Cosmic and begins assisting Galactus in finding planets to consume.
However, Superman’s conscience eventually kicks in. When Galactus sets his sights on a populated world, Superman breaks free from his conditioning and turns against him. With help from the Fantastic Four, he fights back. In the end, Galactus admits he wasn’t the one who destroyed Krypton—Henshaw had tampered with the message to manipulate Superman. Galactus punishes Henshaw and the heroes return to Earth, with Superman giving his cape to Franklin Richards as a thank-you.
Interestingly, while this crossover only exists in comic form, both franchises are set to “meet” again—this time at the box office. James Gunn’s Superman, which kicks off the new DC Universe, is set for release in July 2025. In the same month, Marvel Studios will debut its Fantastic Four reboot. Two superhero films from rival studios competing for audience attention at the same time—a rare moment that brings back memories of their iconic comic book crossover from 25 years ago.
