Swan shared the unpleasant experience she had while playing Valorant at the 2023 GameHers Summit. Affected by sexism?
Unpleasant experiences often happen to everyone, and female gamers are no exception.
The Brand Ambassador from BOOM Esports also shared the unpleasant experience she had while playing Valorant at the 2023 GameHers Summit. She admitted that she experienced sexism.
What is Sexism?
Reporting from Tirto ID, sexism is prejudice and the assumption that one gender is superior or better than the other gender.
Sexism attacks everyone. However, women are more often victims of sexism. One of them is a woman who likes playing games, like Swan.
Swan Shared Unpleasant Experience While Playing Valorant
When present as a speaker at the Talkshow entitled, "Secret Recipe for Women to Thrive Above Prejudices" at the GameHers Summit 2023 on Saturday (7/10) at the PB ESI Office, Gandaria 8 Office Tower, South Jakarta, Swan shared her unpleasant experience while playing Valorant.
The unpleasant experience started when she was on-mic while playing competitive mode in Valorant.
"I want to share my experience regarding sexism. In Valorant, there is an on-mic feature, so we can speak up to provide information in the game. Well, I once had an incident, where I played competitive mode at night in Valorant, With my mic on, and I'm telling you that if the enemy is here, don't come here and here. Suddenly, I was shouted at by (another player) who said, "Girls better stay at home and wash," she said.
Not only that, she also revealed that she was called a noob player.
"Not long after, he said something like, "You're stupid. Why do you play this?" That continued for 13 rounds," she explained again.
She felt that those words were really evil because according to him not all female gamers were a burden in the game.
"I think that's really evil. I just muted him. Finally, I reported him. Honestly, that was my most unpleasant experience," she concluded.
The statement about girls being a burden in a game has been around a lot. Unfortunately, this statement actually gives rise to sexism under the pretext that only girls are a burden in the game.
Well, we hope Swan's unpleasant experience doesn't happen to other female players.
