Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny movie presents an ending for the main character, with Helena Shaw's character taking her back to 1969 from 212 BC. The fifth Indiana Jones movie directed by James Mangold tells the story of the adventures of the most popular archaeologist played by Harrison Ford in searching for the Dial of Destiny with Helena before it fell into the hands of the Nazis. Their search for Archimedes' half of the Dial takes them from New York to Morocco, Greece, and Italy.

After an adventure that takes them to Syracuse, the movie's characters, Indiana Jones or Indy, Helena, and Teddy, who are joined by Voller's Nazi group, head to Archimedes' tomb where they discover that the ancient Greek mathematician was buried wearing a modern clock.

Voller, who had kidnapped Teddy, used the Archimedes watch necklace to open the two halves of the dial. With the coordinates set, Voller plans to fly through the cracks in time to August 20th 1939, kill Hitler, and correct any errors that occur.

However, continental plate shifts send them into the Siege of Syracuse, where Indy meets Archimedes. Voller is killed, and Helena takes Indy back to 1969, where he reunites with Marion and friends. But for some people, the ending of this movie still feels confusing.

What are the explanations for the various ending theories for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny? Spoiler alert, let's talk about all the theories that have been floating around!

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Ending Theories

1. Indy Wants to Stay in the Past and Live with Archimedes

Indiana Jones time travels to the events of the Siege of Syracuse, in which the Romans captured the city and took control of Sicily. Turns out, the Dial of Destiny would always send them back through time to that time.

Archimedes needed help, and he had designed the artifact to do what he needed it to do. Indy wants to live the rest of his life with Archimedes. Indiana Jones has studied various histories, going on various adventures to recover various lost artifacts, but eventually the adventurous archaeologist wants to stay in the past which will give him the opportunity to actually live through major historical events.

It's important to remember, Indy didn't think he had anything he could turn back on in 1969. Marion had left him alone and his son had died in action. Lonely Indy, like Jones, leads a miserable life, and she doesn't want to go back to that wretched feeling.

Perhaps he believed that he could really help Archimedes; at the very least, Indy would find some peace knowing he would die in an event he had been researching for a long time. It would give some meaning to his life, especially when he knew his personal life was in a state of turmoil.

However, Helena knew that her godfather still had something she had to live for, and that moment also brought her some clarity. He wants to be in Indy's life, and he realizes that Indy still has a lot of potential to bring to life.

Plus, if Indiana Jones were to stay in the past, it would change history and the impact of those changes would be too great to quantify. Indy realized that Helena wanted him to stay in her life, and that made her feel that she could still have a positive impact in someone's life. Even though Helena couldn't replace Indy's son who had died, Indy could still be a father figure to her.

2. Indy and Marion Ravenwood to Reunite

Early in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it is revealed that Indy and Marion Ravenwood are in the process of divorcing. Indiana was hesitant to sign the divorce papers, but that was one of the reasons why he turned sullen and overcome with feelings of sadness.

Marion and Indy's marriage is shattered by the death of their son. Mutt Williams enlisted in the military and died in action. Indy mentions that he signed up because the son and father had a previous feud, which may have caused Marion some heartache.

At the end of the day, Marion is grieving and Indiana Jones doesn't really know how to help defuse the problem. This is what makes their relationship cracked and eventually separated.

However, not all hope is lost. Although it seems that everything is over between Indy and Marion's household, Marion still appears at the end of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The fact that Marion answered a call from Helena, who likely informed him of what happened, suggests that Marion still has existing feelings for Indy.

Maybe Marion doesn't want a divorce from Indy, but only sees the separation as the only solution to their problems. However, the end of Dial of Destiny shows them starting to heal their relationship with each other.

Marion stated that everything still hurts, but there is still hope that they will start again with small things and work toward a process to improve their relationship. This is a happy ending

3. Indy Surrenders to Accepting the Time's Decision

Time can change everything, be it people, places, or feelings. Indiana Jones knows this better than anyone, and Dial of Destiny is a story about accepting time, both the present and the past. Old and full of regrets, Indy believes his time is up, that there is no time left for him.

Time made him realize that the past cannot be changed, and he must accept it. Indy’s moment on the Syracuse coast brought the idea to light, but he was tired and ready to give up. However, the highlight of the movie's message is that time does not stand still.

Indy can let his past destroy him, or he can choose to move on, learn from his mistakes, and be there for the people he loves.

On the other hand, Jurgen Voller is not satisfied with stepping forward. He is a criminal who wants to control time as he pleases, believing that time can be changed if he masters it, adjusting time according to his needs rather than letting things take their course.

Voller has not yet come to terms with the fact that the Nazis have been defeated, and he is trying to fight time instead of accepting defeat. Each character is struggling with time in their own way.

4. Helena or Teddy Might Take Indy's Place in Their Next Adventure

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ends with the beloved archaeologist literally putting down his hat and ending his adventure. The fifth movie in the Indiana Jones franchise is also Harrison Ford's final appearance as the whip-swinging adventurer.

With the way the movie ends things, maybe Indiana Jones will retire as a professor and spend the rest of his time with Marion, Helena, Teddy, and Sallah. Indy has a large family, and given his struggles with time, Dial of Destiny suggests he's settling down and living life to the fullest, never to go on another wild archeology adventure.

But even though Indy's adventures are over, that doesn't mean Helena can't take his place in his next archeology adventure. Chances are Indy will fuel Helena's passion for finding other ancient objects.

Helena may have initially wanted the Dial of Destiny to repay her debt, but she is just as interested in the history of the artifact. It held a special place in her heart because of her father's obsession with it.

With the events of Indiana Jones having already tipped its hat, it opens up opportunities for Helena and Teddy to take the reins of whatever adventure is to come. Indy has fully earned his right to rest.

As for the Indiana Jones franchise itself, there are plans to continue the story without Ford present. There were also ideas for several Raiders of the Lost Ark movies and prequels on Disney+, but these plans were ultimately cancelled.

Ford's final appearance has been confirmed as the permanent end to the Indiana Jones franchise. The final scene of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Indy's hat hanging officially marks the end of the archaeologist's adventure, and it leaves his archaeological journey in a good place.

While fans will miss Indiana Jones' epic adventures, Dial of Destiny provides a satisfying conclusion to this iconic saga. Indiana Jones has found his destiny, embarked on an extraordinary journey, and left a legacy that will never be forgotten.

However, if you want to witness the story of Indy who has continued his life to an older age and existed in the 1990s as a veteran who always remembers the various adventures of his youth, you can watch the series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles which has aired on the ABC TV channel from 4th March 1992 to 24th July 1993.
