Gomu Gomu no Mi is the first devil fruit introduced in the series. At the start of the series where Luffy was a kid, Shanks was seen bringing the fruit and store it for certain reasons. Sadly, something unexpected happened.

Little Luffy saw the Gomu Gomu no Mi as an ordinary, ate it without Shanks’ permission, much to his horror. Shanks tried to regurgitate the fruit from Luffy’s mouth but already swollen. Minutes after eating the fruit, Luffy’s body turned into rubber.

The fruit grants Luffy an ability to turn his body into rubber. In other words, he’s now a rubber man. If asked who’s the previous owner of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, many people theorized as Gol D. Roger.

But it looks like it’s not Roger who ate the fruit but instead his wife, Portgas D. Rouge who is the mother of Portgas D. What’s the proof that Rouge is the previous user of Gomu Gomu no Mi?

One thing that shocking from Portgas D. Rouge is that she was pregnant with her baby, Ace, for 20 months. That’s something unusual for a woman in labor. She had been pregnant for 5 months since Roger was executed, then she could hold it for 15 months more after Roger’s passing. Logically, how is that possible?

According to the fan’s theory, this is possible because Haki owned, as well as a pain killer due to the Gomu Gomu no Mi she ate. It can be assumed that females who ate devil fruit need more labor time to give birth.

This also explains why Shanks' looking for this fruit. Shanks knows that Rouge is the wife of his captain, Roger. Because of that, after Shanks found the fruit, he wanted to keep it from anyone who wanted to use this for evil.

Rouge passed away after giving birth to Ace, which means the pain she bears during a long time of pregnancy, even though she already possessed Gomu Gomu no Mi. Probably this devil fruit is unsuitable for females because due to its dangerous side effects.
