Loyal manga readers disappointed every time they finished reading their favorite mangas; both have to wait for 30 days to enjoy the next chapter or time-off announcement next week. Chill out, because, on Boruto Volume 2, the author of Boruto manga, Mikio Ikemoto stated that creating a manga series is a lot of work!

"Boruto is serialized on [weekly magazine] Weekly Shonen Jump, but it’s a special case, only appears once in a month. Weekly series generally have 19 pages in one chapter, so monthly [series] has four times more or around 76 pages. But Boruto only has 45 to 47 pages, only 60 percent of it.”

"But I still spend around one week to rough sketches, around 20 days to perfect it, and the rest of the time coloring it and other works… so I still spend a month full [on making Boruto]”

"[Monthly serialization] is not something that I requested, and I also don’t know whose decision is that, but I’m a little bit relieved that Boruto published once in a month…”

40 or more pages consumes one month? Feels like bluffing, don’t you think? But according to Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, working on weekly published manga that consists of 19 pages is more extreme -- as he only sleeps for around 2 hours every day!

From Monday to Thursday - Preparing storyline (sketches, rough drafts, and inking):

  • 00:00 - 06:00: Work;
  • 06:00 - 09:00: Sleep;
  • 09:00 - 13:00: Work;
  • 13:00 - 14:00: Lunch;
  • 14:00 - 23:00: Work;
  • 23:00 - 12:00: Dinner + Taking a bath.

From Friday to Saturday - Preparing storyboard (concepting):

  • 22:00 - 03:00: Work;
  • 03:00 - 09:00: Sleep;
  • 09:00 - 13:00: Looking for referenced and watching videos;
  • 13:00 - 15:00: Lunc + cleaning up a bit;
  • 15:00 - 20:00: Work;
  • 20:00 - 22:00: Diner + taking a bath.

"If the storyboard is unfinished on that day, then [Kishimoto-sensei] often must work until Sunday…”

The same thing also stated by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece...

When interviewed on celebrating the release of One Piece: Gold via the promotional booklet titled One Piece Shinbun, the interviewer asked that four years ago Oda stated that he could sleep at 02:00 and wakes up at 05:00 in the morning, then how he keep doing it for 15 years?

"Basically, mine [schedule] is still the same. I’m still racing with the deadline, so now I’m as busy as my younger self, and I always managed it by sleeping for 3 hours [on finish the deadline]. And if I have to sleep longer, hours for doing other things will be wasted. I don’t like it, so my working hours are still the same.”

Meanwhile, here’s Oda’s schedule every week -- which is more extreme than Kishimoto because he’s still working until Sunday:

  • Monday - Wednesday: Layoutings and character dialogues;
  • Thursday - Saturday: Drawing and inking;
  • Sunday: Coloring and doing other works.

In 2014, Oda once rushed to the hospital and hospitalized and had a tonsil surgery that swollen on his neck “every time he felt exhausted”. Luckily since that day, Oda is more taking time-offs and workout to stay healthy.

"I’m trying to drink two liters of water every day. Just drink water and you’ll be healthy … throwing all toxins in your body,” said Oda.

But it doesn’t mean that they don’t have a day off. Aside from Japan’s National Holidays, sometimes Weekly Shonen Jump often combine two-week editions into one volume to give more time to the manga artist to finish a chapter. So, from now on, don’t get enraged easily if your favorite mangas get delayed!
