KOEI TECMO recently announced a new Live Action movie called Dynasty Warriors whose name you should be familiar with. The Hack and Slash series from KOEI TECMO is among the first of its genre with some exciting gameplays throughout its lifespan. You can fight solo against hundreds or even thousands of troops in a giant, single battlefield as Dynasty Warriors Heroes traverse the map by riding either a warhorse or elephant.
Dynasty Warriors is now 20 years old with an array of exciting mainline titles as well as spin-offs which not only brings about fans of the games but also enthusiasts who religiously follow the story of the playable heroes of ancient China during the Han Dynasty.
Taking the backgrounds of the three kingdoms during the fall of Han Dynasty (a.k.a. Samkok or Romance of the Three Kingdoms), Dynasty Warriors depict the tales of historical warfares that happened throughout the entire land of ancient China.
During that period, China was split into three huge kingdoms called Shu, Wei and Wu. There are political moves, conquests, and tragedies surrounding these kingdoms that are engaging and surprisingly deep to indulge into. Among the influential characters portrayed in Dynasty Warriors Heroes, here are some of the toughest ones to play with.
1. Cao Cao
This charismatic yet ruthless figure is among the most influential figures in the history of ancient China. Cao Cao is the leader of Wei Kingdom who commands a very powerful army and a powerful man himself to play with. Along with his troops, he even manages to capture the infamous warlord Lu Bu through a cunning tactic; he captures Lu Bu while falling asleep thanks to liquor and executes him. Cao Cao then takes over Lu Bu’s gallant warhorse the Red Hare before handing it over to Guan Yu, the legendary long-bearded warrior.
Cao Cao is also famous for his role during the Battle of Chi Bi or the battle of the red cliff, widely considered as one of the biggest naval wars during the period. He led his gigantic naval force to break through the enemies’ ranks. Curiously though, rumor says that Cao Cao holds an ancient China’s football-like sport to raise his soldiers’ morale before and after a war. And lastly, Cao Cao’s majestic king sword is a sight to behold if you love playing as him.
2. Zhao Yun
Some gamers recognize Zhao Yun as Zhilong, particularly the MOBA Mobile Legends players. In that game, he was previously known as Yun Zhao before the game developer later on changed his name to Zhilong. As for his role in Dynasty Warriors, he’s always depicted as the star of the show, a hero with valor and stunning appearance befitting his statue as a hero of legend.
Zhao Yun is a warrior from the Shu Kingdom led by Liu Bei. With his elastic and iconic spear, he is experienced in both one-on-one battle and breaking through the enemy’s rank all by himself. His most iconic scene is during his assault through Wei’s troops to save Liu Bei’s then-baby Liu Chan. On his way to bring the baby to safety, he thrusts his spear into the enemies without hesitation.
3. Guan Yu
It feels lacking to list all the toughest Dynasty Warriors heroes without mentioning the legendary warlord Guan Yu. Widely regarded as the best general of the Shu Kingdom, he sports a very tall figure with an iconic long beard.
Under the Oath of the Peach Garden, Guan Yu swore brotherhood with his future Shu kingdom companions Liu Bei and Zhang Fei. His iconic weapon is the 60-kilogram guandao ready to lop off the enemies with valor and dedication to protect those he loves.

4. Lu Bu
Although depicted as a fearsome antagonist during the fall of Han Dynasty, many people also love Lu Bu as a very powerful hero. He is a general among the Dong Zhuo’s rank who is perhaps mostly known for his role in defending the Hu Lao Gate. His gigantic posture, fearsome armor and iconic head accessory makes him a very memorable character, especially considering his explosive appearance that makes his opponents cower in fear as he effortlessly flies them away like a human firework. As his soundtrack starts to play, he quickly becomes a very tough enemy to beat, one that you might as well avoid at all cost.
With his gigantic halberd and his iconic Red Hare warhorse, Lu Bu easily breaks through the enemies for breakfast. In fact, his warhorse is among the most sought-after assets in the game among players. Players also find him very easy and powerful to use, true to his reputation.
5. Sima Yi
Not every figure in Dynasty Warriors is a fighter, some are strategists like Sima Yi. As a strategist for the Wei Kingdom, his intelligence is almost unmatched by anyone except his eternal rival Zhuge Liang, a fellow strategist from Shu Kingdom. Along with his intelligence, Sima Yi is also cunning like a snake befitting his appearance and image.
While he seems like a loyal member of the Wei Kingdom for Cao Cao even until his succession to Cao Pi, Sima Yi is plotting for a rebellion against Wei by finishing off the Cao’s closest members. Later on, Sima Yi forms his own Jin Kingdom and becomes the founder of the fourth kingdom, a dark horse among the first three kingdoms. While Sima Yi’s signature weapon is his brilliant war tactics which doesn’t seem harmful during a direct confrontation, his intelligence makes his assault against the enemies just as fatal as getting bitten by a venomous snake.
6. Sun Shang Xiang
In addition to heroic male figures, there are also quite a large number of powerful female figures in Dynasty Warriors, including Sun Shang Xiang. A daughter of Sun Jian from Wu Kingdom, she defends her kingdom along with her siblings Sun Ce and Sun Quang against the army of pirates.
Long-time fans of Dynasty Warriors can easily spot Sun Shang Xiang as a short-hair figure with agile movement and either a bow or a pair of chakrams as her weapons. She is also known as the future spouse of Shu Kingdom’s leader, Liu Bei.
These six iconic Dynasty Warriors characters are just among the few of many other famous heroic figures of ancient China for 20 years. Of all the characters from the series, which ones are your favorites?
