Captain America: Brave New World officially premiered in Indonesia on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. This film marks the fourth installment in the Captain America saga, but this time, Steve Rogers is no longer the one wielding the shield—it’s Sam Wilson.
As shown at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve entrusted his role as Captain America to Wilson.
This decision makes Sam Wilson’s version of Captain America an intriguing character to follow. Unlike Steve Rogers, who gained enhanced abilities from the Super Soldier Serum, Wilson is just an ordinary human. Taking on the mantle of a symbol of justice without superhuman strength is undoubtedly a challenging and risky endeavor.
But why doesn’t Wilson use the serum to enhance himself? The answer is quite profound and aligns with the future direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
1. Sam Wilson Prioritizes Strategy in Combat
Initially, Wilson had doubts about accepting the shield Steve Rogers left behind. This was evident in the The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021) series, where he even surrendered the shield to the government.
However, after much contemplation, he ultimately embraced his destiny as Captain America without relying on the Super Soldier Serum.
In an interview with Deadline, Anthony Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson, confirmed that his character would not take the serum. According to Mackie, Wilson is not a fighter who relies solely on brute strength—he is a strategist who outsmarts his opponents. Intelligence and tactics are his greatest weapons.
2. The New Captain America Feels More Grounded
Wilson’s decision to forgo the Super Soldier Serum makes him a more grounded version of Captain America. Unlike Steve Rogers, who possessed superhuman abilities, Wilson remains a regular human who experiences fatigue, self-doubt, and emotional struggles. This makes him more relatable to those around him.
Even though he now carries the Captain America title, Wilson still relies on advanced technology, such as his wings, in combat. This demonstrates that he still requires assistance, unlike Steve Rogers, who could depend solely on his physical prowess.
With this approach, Sam Wilson introduces a fresh perspective as Captain America, making the character feel more connected to the reality of ordinary people.
