Indonesian people, usually young people, often use or type 'wkwkwk’ as the substitution for laughing expressions in online media. Admit it, some amongst you often use that word. The word ‘wkwkwk’ basically has the same meaning as ‘laugh of loud (lol)’ overseas or ‘hahaha’. But for some reason, Indonesian tend to use ‘wkwkwk’ (read as weka-weka).

According to a question and answer website, Quora, someone posted a question. The question was simple, “Why do Indonesian use “wkwkwk” for “hahaha”? Various answers came to the board and answered directly by Indonesians. From many opinions, at least we could know the origins of ‘wkwkwk’ word itself.

According to Quora user, Dio Wijaya Nugroho, who is a Ragnarok Online, Gunbound, and DOTA player, the usage of ‘wkwkwk’ began among the online games community. Online game players often use substitution words in the chat, for faster typing. For example, almost all gamers were using “gua”, a slang word for “saya”, which means “I” or “me”. The word was very hard to type on the keyboard, then online players switched the “ua” to “w”, so the “gua” turned into “gw”.

Later, still on the same explanation by Dio, online game players love unusual things. They thought that ‘hahaha’ looked very plain and basic. Then it changed to ‘bwahaha’, ‘huehuehe’, and ‘huahuaha’. But, because typing those words were time-consuming if added with ‘ue’ and ‘ua’, then those words were replaced by ‘w’, creating ‘hwhwhwhw’. The point is, according to Dio, online gamers would be faster on typing 'w' and 'k' without moving the right hand.

Another Quora user, Johannes Sulistyo, who is a Counter-Strike player, approves Dio’s statement if the ‘wkwkwk’ was born from online gamers. But Johannes has his own opinion, according to him, online gamers often express sarcastic laughs with ‘ka-ka-ka-ka’, based on ‘ngakak’. But spiced it up by adding the letter ‘w’ at the beginning, creating ‘wakakakakaka’. Because, again, it took time to type, then it was shortened by removing the letter ‘a’, hence the creation of ‘wkwkwkwkwk’.

Those two opinions are valid because everyone has the right to speak, but in reality, there’s no clear proof of where and when the word came from theoretically. No matter what, we have to give our respect to online gamers because their expression can go worldwide and used by many.
