Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was first announced in February of this year. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be the latest entry from the Xenoblade series. Based on the snippets from the trailer, we know that the open-world RPG will likely follow in the footsteps of the previous titles, offering players an exciting world to explore, full of quests, a touching story, and uniquely memorable characters. On this occasion, Dunia Games has summarized everything we’ve known so far from the trailer. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Release Date

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is slated for an exclusive Nintendo Switch release on July 29, 2022. This release date is two months earlier than Nintendo previously announced, which is a rare occurrence in the gaming industry.

Plotline

Set in a futuristic society torn apart by war, it feels safe to call Xenoblade Chronicles 3 the most dystopian entry in the Xenoblade series. The game primarily examines two factions--Keves and Agnus--who are in constant battle with one another. These battles are fought by young soldiers who are artificially created and given 10 years--referred to as "terms" in-game--to live. However, such a violent lifestyle means hardly any of them even live that long.

On both Keves and Agnus exist special units called Off-Seers who are in charge of sending the spirits of fallen soldiers off to the great beyond by playing a special song. The trailers first introduce us to Noah, a flute-wielding Off-Seer serving the nation of Keves, before also showcasing Mio, an Agnian Off-Seer currently in her tenth year.

Characters

The story in this game may be focusing mostly on Off-Seers Noah and Mio, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3 also features six playable characters: Noah, Mio, Eunie, Lanz, Sena, and Taion. Noah, Eunie, and Lanz are childhood friends who hail from Keves, the black-clad, warring society driven by technology. Whereas Mio, Sena, and Taion are natives of the mystical nation of Agnus.

While these two factions might be caught in a never-ending cycle of war and ruin, it would seem like some inciting incident, and the reveal of a true and common enemy, which ultimately unites the former enemies.

More details are still yet to be unveiled about these characters, though it seems that Eunie and Lanz have more confidence and fiery demeanors compared to Sena and the scholarly Taion.

Gameplay

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is touted to be the biggest open-world game from Nintendo so far. While the game starts out linearly, it will likely gradually reveal a massive world filled with quests, crafting, optional bosses, and more. Just like previous titles in the series, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 features an MMO-style combat system where party members are divided into three main classes: attackers, defenders, and healers. Aside from these main classes, your party members can also choose from various subclasses, each comes with its own unique weapons and outfits.

Unlike the previous titles, in which when you are assigned to one character, you won’t be able to use another character, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 allows players to switch between your six party members in the middle of battles. Thus, you’ll be able to pull off combos more often, which also means that it requires more strategic thinking.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 also has the Ouroboros ability, which allows two compatible party members to fuse together into a giant mech-like creature. The trailer implies that Noah and Mio can perform this, and it's also likely for the other four party members to perform this as well.

Trailer

First revealed in the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, the first trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 gives a quick look at the game's war-torn world, its characters, and what the exploration will look like. The trailer also included a release date, September 2022, before it's eventually pushed forward.

Following the more narrative-driven first trailer, the second trailer focuses more on combat. Apart from showing off the MMO-style combat system, the trailer also gives a glimpse into the Ouroboros abilities, a strange power that allows two party members to connect and merge to form a mecha-like creature. The trailer also gives a new game release date which is July 29, 2022.

During the June 2022 Nintendo Direct, Monolith Soft again released a more comprehensive look at Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The trailer begins with a closer look at a mysterious organization that makes the game's story even more complex. This trailer reveals that the party members can only live for ten years before they die. It also implies that the main theme of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is life, and how we inject meaning into it. 

So, do you have to play Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 before playing the third one? Monolith Soft Director said that players don't have to play the previous titles as these games are not tied to one another. He also revealed that "The name 'Xeno' actually exists to make it clear that these are Tetsuya Takahashi productions." Although there will be some references to other titles in the series, new players don't have to worry about missing out on the story.
