Arthur Morgan is the central character and the main protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). Set in 1899, this game revolves around the life of Arthur, a cowboy who becomes a member of the Van der Linde gang. Arthur and his fellow criminals must defend themselves against rival gangs, government security forces, and other enemies. This game is considered a prequel to Red Dead Redemption (RDR), and features John Marston the protagonist of the first game who is here as a member of the same gang as Arthur.

Unlike most characters in the RDR universe, Arthur is only mentioned in RDR2. The characters were developed specifically for RDR2 in order to give gamers more insight into the Van der Linde gang and the characters they liked in the first game. Because of that, there's still a lot that people don't know about Arthur. Are you curious about the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2? Let's look at 10 facts about Arthur Morgan, the manly cowboy!

1. He Comes From A Family Of Criminals

According to Wiki Fandom, Arthur Morgan comes from a family of criminals which explains why he was so successful in his crimes. The cowboy was born to Beatrice and Lyle Morgan in 1863. The father was finally arrested for theft in 1874 when his son was only eleven years old.

It seems that Arthur lived alone for several years after his father's arrest. In 1878, when he was 15 years old, he was finally picked up by Dutch van der Linde, who was considered a father figure. Arthur becomes one of the first members of Dutch's notorious gang.

2. He is Quite Open Minded for a Bandit

For a bandit in the 19th century, Red Dead Redemption 2 fans have expressed their surprise at how Open Minded Arthur Morgan is. These characters have no problem getting along with other characters from different backgrounds. Unlike some of the other characters in this game, the differences in race and gender don't seem to affect Arthur's opinion which is quite open-minded.

The Van der Linde gang itself is, a gang consisting of a black man freed from slavery named Lenny Summers, then there is Charles Smith an Indian mulatto, a Bounty Hunter from Mexico named Javier Escuella, a thief of Irish descent, Sean MacGuire, and a vengeful widow. named Sadie Adler. The Van der Linde gang also had a backing band consisting of some tough women, but Arthur considered them to be his equal.

Things like that rarely happen in the 19th century, which still has a high level of racism. But because of the principle: what is needed in this gang is for every member to follow Dutch's ideals and where the members come from is not important, it is not difficult to see that positive notion rubs off on Arthur's mindset.

3. He Has A Son Named Isaac

It's easy to imagine that Arthur Morgan has always lived life as a free and irresponsible bandit. While he's always been part of his gang, Arthur does have a  small family.

In his youth, Arthur met a barmaid named Eliza. After a brief romance, they had a son named Isaac. Eliza is aware of Arthur's past as a criminal but she still accepts his support. Arthur would actually come and stay with his family every few months for a few days at a time.

However, one day when Arthur returned to his son's house, he found two graves outside his house. He later learned that Eliza and their 10 year old son had been killed by robbers. This tragedy may explain why Arthur can be seen as harsh and cold.

4. He Supports Women's Voting in General Elections

In the game, we will find various female characters who fight for women's voting rights that have not been legalized by law in the 19th century. While many of the other characters seem bothered by the presence of the female social activists, Arthur Morgan is sympathetic to their purpose in a scene.

There is a mission in the game that requires Arthur to protect Penelope when she participates in a demo to demand the legalization of women's suffrage. There is even a choice that players can make in this game, which makes Arthur ride a horse-drawn carriage used for demonstrations by activists who defend women's rights.

5. Fell in Love with Mary

While it seems that Arthur Morgan's only true love is the Wild Wild West, the character is made for lovers too.

The bandit was in his teens when he met Mary, whom he fell in love with. However, Mary comes from an upper class family who disapproves of Arthur's criminal life and opposes their love affair. Because of this, the two were finally forced to end their relationship.

After that it was revealed that Mary was married to someone else. But she ends up getting close to Arthur again after she becomes a widow and when Mary's sister gets into trouble that Arthur can solve.

6. He Almost Left The Gang For Mary

Given their passionate romance, it's hard to believe that Arthur Morgan and Mary didn't try to escape the Van der Linde gang to start living together. And it turns out that both of them actually tried but failed.

After reconnecting with Mary in Chapter 4, gamers learn that Arthur actually agreed to leave the gang to be with his girlfriend after a mission he thought would be Arthur's final bank robbery. When his mission goes awry and his ship sinks, Arthur is trapped on the island of Guarma.

While we don't know how long Arthur was stranded in Guarma, we can assume that it lasted quite a while because the next thing we know that Mary has moved out of her town. When Arthur finally returns to his city, he receives a letter from Mary saying that she can't wait for him anymore...

7. He Lives By His Own Code

Even though Arthur Morgan commits crime in the game, that doesn't mean he thinks violence or murder is acceptable in his code of ethics. On the other hand, he sees the crime as part of his gang's business. Arthur's principle is that hurting people should not be done without reason or for sheer pleasure.

Because of this code of ethics, Arthur finally experiences a difference of opinion which ends in a feud with Dutch and several members of the Van der Linde gang that Micah provokes.

8. Gamers Can Control How Arthur Age

Arthur Morgan's hairstyle and clothes are not the only cosmetic that can be customized, but also his entire appearance. Depending on how you treat him in the game, it will affect whether Arthur ages beautifully or becomes in a less well-developed physical state.

Gamers are responsible for taking care of Arthur's basic necessities of life. If you keep Arthur healthy, he will retain the burly body he had when you first started playing this game. However, if you overfeed him, this can cause him to gain weight, which in turn will affect his stamina. Likewise, if you don't feed him properly, he will start to get thinner, although this will give him more stamina.

Because of the details of this game, over time you will see Arthur's hair and beard can grow thick if left untreated. His sunburnt skin will also be visible if you make Arthur under the hot sun without a hat and clothes to protect him.

9. He Contracted Tuberculosis When Collecting Debt

Many RDR2 players imagine that someone as epic as Arthur Morgan will end up with an epic fate. With various shootings and robberies that he did, many expected Arthur to end up with an epic fate like being shot in a duel. But Arthur ended with an anticlimax because of Tuberculosis or TB he suffered.

A debt collection mission makes Arthur have to chase and beat a farmer who suffers from tuberculosis. The farmer even coughed up blood in Arthur's face which immediately infected his illness. In the 19th century, tuberculosis was one of the leading causes of death because no drug was developed at that time.

10. Arthur's Honor Affected His Final Fate

It turns out that the way you play this game affects Arthur Morgan’s fate. In other words, Honor was an important thing. This concept is different from the first RDR game where this Honor feature doesn't seem too important. Whether you play as a good person or not doesn't affect the outcome of the first RDR game.

However, in RDR 2, you will get a different fate depending on the good or bad choices you make. If you have a low Honor score, Micah will viciously kill Arthur. But a high Honor score would make Arthur die peacefully on the mountain due to his tuberculosis.
