Pokemon Red and Blue first released on September 28, 1998, in North America. Children born in the 90s may be familiar with this Pokemon Generation 1 game on Game Boy. In this throwback column, Dunia Games wants to discuss interesting facts that you need to know about Pokemon Red and Blue. Take a look at the article below!

1. The Generation 1 in Japan is not Red and Blue

Many people think that Pokemon Red and Blue is the game that started the Pokemon series. This statement is not quite right, because the two games are not the first game to be released. You need to know that the Blue version was not released alongside Red in Japan.

The original versions of Gen 1 that first released in Japan was Red and Green. Charizard and Venusaur are the true mascots of the first two Pokemon games ever released. Meanwhile, Blastoise, the mascot for Pokemon Blue, is the third version after that.

2. Almost Had a Female Protagonist

If you take a closer look at the concept art of Pokemon Red and Blue, you will find an interesting fact, namely the existence of a female protagonist. In the picture above, you can see that each character has their Pokemon partner.

In other words, if you choose Red you will automatically get Bulbasaur, while if you choose the female character you will get Squirtle. Charmander will be used by Blue. We don't know why the developer scrapped the female character as the protagonist.

3. Rhydon is the First Pokemon to be Designed

Even though Bulbasaur is the first Pokemon in Pokedex, it is not the first pokemon designed by Game Freak. The first Pokemon to be designed was Rhydon. This used to be one of the most popular trivia from this series, but as time went by, fans started to forget about it.

4. Nintendo Once Thought that This Game Will Fail

There are times when Pokemon games’ sales are not guaranteed to sell well, such as Pokemon Red and Blue. At that time, Nintendo firmly believed that Game Freak would not be able to cover their losses with Pokemon Red and Blue.

Nintendo's prediction turned out to be wrong because Game Freak was making a fortune at the time. Another interesting fact is Game Freak believes that Gen 2 will end the franchise series because it is not expected to be able to skyrocket. Again, the prediction was wrong because the second series also provided extraordinary profit.

5. Psychic-Type is Overpowered

In the Pokemon Gen 1 game, the Psychic-type is the strongest. This is because they can provide super effective attacks on Ghost types, while the Ghost-type attack itself does not affect the Psychic-type. Not only that, most Psychic-type Pokemon have very high attack stats and very powerful moves.

By only having a Pokemon like Alakazaman, you might be able to finish the game quite easily.

6. Rock-Type Pokemon Does Not Immune to Electric

Of all the Pokemon games, only Pokemon Red and Blue has this misconception. In this game, Rock-type Pokemons are not immune to Electric attacks. Even though in all the games, Rock-type Pokemon are immune to Electric. This concept began to be corrected in Gen 2.

7. Red is Not Ash

Maybe many players don't know that Red is not Ash Ketchum. Even Red's design isn't inspired by Ash at all. Red has a quiet and patient character, while Ash is energetic and friendly.

There are still many players who believe that Ash should be the protagonist in the game. Even though the anime staff gave a much different design between Ash and Red.

8. Hyper Beam Has the Wrong Function

The Hyper Beam attack in Pokemon Red and Blue doesn't work properly. As long as the attack is successful in defeating your opponent, you don't need to replenish the technique. Even though players shouldn't be able to attack for a moment because they have to recharge after using Hyper Beam.

9. Professor Oak Once Planned to be the Final Boss

Apart from the female protagonist, Professor Oak was also planned to be the final boss replacing Blue. With 5 Pokemon that you have developed from scratch, you will face him as a champion.

He will use Pokemon which is the weakness of the starter you choose. Unfortunately, this never happens. Even though it would be very interesting if Professor Oak became the final boss because he was the first to give Red the Pokemon before starting his adventure.

10. No Need to Challenge Lt. Surge

You have to know that you don't need to beat Lt. Surge to finish the game. You do need a badge from him to enter Victory Road, but without that, you can still finish the game. This is because Lt. Surge will give you HM Flash which is you don't necessarily need it. You can still get out of the cave even without Flash.
