Hinokami Kagura, which translates to Dance of the Fire God, is a breathing style exclusively known and taught by the Kamado family, which was then revealed to be the first Breathing Style, Sun Breathing.

This technique is passed down in the Kamado family through generations, along with the Hanafuda earrings. The Kamado family uses this Breathing Style within a ritual ceremony practiced every new year, where the user offers the Fire God a dance from sunset to sunrise to ward off threats and diseases.

This dance is composed of twelve segments repeated throughout the night. The last user of Hinokami Kagura is Tanjiro Kamado, who learned it from his father, Tanjuro Kamado. Other people can learn this technique from a Kamado descendant.

The Hinokami Kagura is later revealed by Shinjuro Rengoku to be a legendary Breathing Style known as Sun Breathing -- which is the first Breathing Style ever created.

Once it is learned by the boy, the Hanafuda earrings, a family heirloom, are also passed down to him and worn in battles, to show that he has learned the technique.

2. The Base of Every Breathing Style

The Sun Breathing is the first Breathing Style used in the Demon Slayer universe. Yoriichi Tsugikuni was the first to develop Sun Breathing, which he later taught to his pupils. However, since each pupil had their own combat style, he created numerous variations of Breathing Styles to adapt to the combat style of his pupils.

3. Created and Perfected by Yoriichi Tsugikuni

Yoriichi Tsugikuni was a legendary Demon Slayer, whose strength and talent are unparalleled. Even when he was just a child, he was able to defeat older opponents, and eventually killed more Demons than anyone else when he’s an adult. 

He created the Sun Breathing Style, which was then branched out into other Breathing Styles. Yoriichi also came up with the Thirteenth Form that’s almost able to kill Muzan Kibutsuji.

4. It Almost Killed Muzan

As mentioned before, Yoriichi used the Thirteenth Form of the Sun Breathing to deal with Muzan. He managed to make Muzan severely injured and left scars on him -- which never fade for hundreds of years since their battle took place.

5. Only Four People are Known to have Mastered the Technique

Currently, there are only four people known to have mastered this technique: Yoriichi Tsugikuni, Sumiyoshi, Tanjuro Kamado, and Tanjiro Kamado.

6. Some Facts about Sumiyoshi

Sumiyoshi is one of Tanjiro’s ancestors and the first member of the family to learn the Sun Breathing technique. After watching Yoriichi dance the Hinokami Kagura for the last time, he memorized all the movements so he could keep the technique alive. He began the tradition of passing down this technique from the father to his son and called it Hinokami Kagura. He also received the Hanafuda earrings as an heirloom.

7. Similar to the Sun Breathing Style

Granted, the Sun Breathing Style is the first Breathing Style ever created, yet the technique shares the same style as Hinokami Kagura. When Kokushibo tried to kill all of the Sun Breathing Style users, this technique was able to survive.

That’s why the Kamado family continues to secretly pass this technique down under the name of HInokami Kagura, to keep the Sun Breathing Style from Kokushibo. 

8. It’s Relation to the Moon Breathing Style

Kokushibo, Yoriichi’s twin brother, wanted to create a Breathing Style that opposes Yoriichi’s Sun Breathing Style. He created the Moon Breathing Style and tried to destroy and eradicate Yoriichi’s technique.

9. The Thirteenth Form was Created to Kill Muzan

Initially, there were only twelve forms of Hinokami Kagura. Then, Yoriichi created the Thirteenth Form specifically to kill Muzan by destroying his vital organs.

To use the Thirteenth Form, the user has to perform all of the twelve forms in rapid succession. When used, this technique increases its user’s stamina, accuracy, and agility -- allowing them to move even more quickly and land more attacks with precision.

10. The Definition of Kagura

In Shinto beliefs, Kagura is a ritual dance where practicers perform these dances to honor the gods and spirits. The original Kagura was performed to tempt the sun goddess out of a cave.
