There are many romantic anime that you can watch with beautiful anime characters. But not all of them have a plot as unique as Kuzu no Honkai that is quite popular and loved by many. Adapted from a manga of the same title, Kuzu no Honkai focuses on a complicated love story.

One thing worth noting is that there’s a spin-off series titled Kuzu no Honkai Decor which clears up the entanglement in this story. 1. Alternative Title

Some may know Kuzu no Honkai by its alternative title, Scum’s Wish. Scum’s Wish is the literal translation of its Japanese title in English.

FYI, Kuzu no Honkai is a Japanese manga by Mengo Yokari. The anime adaptation is produced by Lerche and was aired from January 12, 2017 to March 30, 2017 on Fuji TV’s program titled Noitamina.

2. Seinen Anime

Kuzu no Honkai is a seinen anime. Meaning the franchise is meant for adult male, although in practice, the term seinen is ambiguous because it can be used to describe male between 20-50 years old. Despite its ambiguity, the seinen genre commonly has a more mature theme than the shounen genre. Mature in this context here has more than one meaning.

The anime tells the story of a high school student named Hanabi Yasuraoka who fell in love with Narumi Kanai. Narumi was her childhood friend who is older than her and becomes her homeroom teacher in school. Upon seeing Narumi’s eyes when he met Akane Minagawa, Hanabi realized that Narumi fell in love with Akane.

Janabi then met Mugi Awaya, a student who fell in love with Akane, his tutor when he was in middle school. Hanabi and Mugi then start a fake relationship to substitute for the love they can’t have, emotionally and sexually. They agree to not fall in love with each other and will end their fake relationship if the people they like return their feelings.

3. Published in Big Gangan from Square Enix

As many people know, Square Enix is known for its video games such as Final Fantasy. But the company also deals in other sectors such as manga like Kuzu no Honkai.

Square Enix published the manga in Big Gangan from 2012 to 2017. There are 8 tankoubon volumes of Kuzu no Honkai published.

4. The Female Lead is Hanabi Yasuraoka

The female lead of Kuzu no Honkai is a high school girl named Hanabi Yasuraoka. In short, Hanabi fell in love with her homeroom teacher, Narumi Kanai, her childhood friend. It all happens when Narumi’s mother passed away when he was young, so he often visited Hanabi’s home to eat.

Hanabi’s feelings for Narumi remain until high school. But upon realizing that Narumi fell for Akane, Hanabi starts a fake relationship with Mugi to stave off their loneliness.

She then started a physical relationship with her best friend Sanae, but the relationship ended after Sanae decided to give up to Hanabi. Hanabi then decided to call things off with Mugi and went on a different path to find her true love. She reappeared in the spin-off after the events of the original series.

5. The Male Lead is Mugi Awaya

The male lead of Kuzu no Honkai is a high school boy named Mugi Awaya. He fell in love with the new music teacher, Akane Minagawa, who tutored him in the past. They start a fake relationship with Mugi to stave off their loneliness.

In middle school, Mugi was already in a secret relationship with his senpai, Mei Hayakawa, who took his virginity because he couldn't confess to Akane. Mugi then realized what type of person Akane is but the feelings remain. In the series, Mugi then confessed to Akane and they started dating.

However, Mugi realized that the Akane he is dating is different from the Akane from his image, so he decided to end things with Akane and hopes to move on from her. He moved on from her after ending things with Hanabi to chase a better life and find his true love.

6. Heartbroken by Two Teachers

The twisted love story in Kuzu no Honkai starts when both leads, Hanabi and Mugi, realize that the people they like, Narumi and Akane, seem to like each other.

But the truth is more complicated than that and the two leads are unhappy with that fact. The heartbroken tale presented in Kuzu no Honkai is quite unique.

7. Two Protagonists in One Relationship

In their lonely state, the two leads of Kuzu no Honkai decided to start a fake relationship to substitute their unrequited love. They also promised to not fall in love with each other.

They also promised to end their fake relationship when their feelings are returned by the people they like. A condition that is rarely present in a fake relationship in any manga or anime.

8. The Plot Got Even More Complicated with More Relationship Involved

The relationship between the leads got even more complicated with more people involved. Hanabi got into a relationship with her classmate Sanae Ebato. Sanae fell in love with Hanabi after she saved her from abuse. When Sanae stayed at Hanabi’s house, she decided to kiss Hanabi and confess her love. They then started a physical relationship. 

Atsuya, a boy who likes Sanae, asked her if she truly fell in love with Hanabi or if it is just a matter of sexual attraction. After much consideration, Sanae decided to end her relationship and friendship with Hanabi. Hanabi refused and said that she wanted them to remain friends.

Hanabi and give Sanae time and space to clear her head. In the manga, it was hinted that Sanae will return Atsuya’s feelings someday. In the spin-off, she fully embraced her sexuality and started a relationship with a lecturer at her university named Yuka.

9. Mature Storyline

Despite the complicated love story, how they managed their problems are much more mature than people expected. Like how the two leads ended up not falling for each other. Instead, they call things off and find someone they can truly love/

They moved on from their past interests like how Mugi realized that Akane has an impossible standard in his imagination with Akane.

10. A Spin-Off Manga

As mentioned before, besides the anime adaptation, Kuzu no Honkai also has a spin-off manga titled Kuzu no Honkai Decor. The spin-off focuses on Hanabi after the main series.

But the spin-off also includes the stories of other characters such as Sanae. Overall, Kuzu no Honkai Decor has a much happier ending, a more fitting ending for people who like the series.
