Battle Royale is the game genre that is currently popular in the community. Started with the popularity of PUBG (Player’s Unknown Battleground) and later followed by Fortnite: Battle Royale and then the game becomes the most popular game in 2018.
But do you know that the Battle Royale genre was introduced first in the film industry? Now many films use this Battle Royale concept as its main selling point, besides the top-tier actors and actresses. What are these films? Check the list below to add more movie references when you are bored at home.
1. The Hunger Games
Movie fans must be familiar with The Hunger Games series. The film is adapted from a novel series with the same title by Suzanne Collins. The film directed by Gary Ross is about the life and death competition of the citizens that is delivered in a reality show and broadcasted on TV. The life and death competition is participated by 24 individuals, one male and one female, each represents their home district.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) are one of the participants. Their mentor was one of the winners of The Hinger Games, Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson). Haymitch taught them survival skills. The Hunger Games was accused of copying a Battle Royale film from Japan because of the similar plot.
2. Death Race
The combination of action and racing is exciting to watch. One of the films with the combination of both elements is Death Race. The film is set in 2012 when the United States suffers from a devastating financial crisis and the unemployment rate is high. Resulting in a high crime rate and jails become packed. However, an individual looked at this as an opportunity to make a reality show where the inmates with life sentences are told to compete in a race called “Death Race.”
The race is held on Terminal Island and most of the racers died in this race. The winners are granted their freedom. Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) lost his job as a laborer and accused of killing his wife. He is sent to Terminal Island the “Death Race” is going. He is offered a way out by Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen) if he participates in the race as Frankenstein, the former winner of “Death Race.” But Jensen understands that something odd is happening in Terminal Island so he needs to act alongside other inmates.
3. Battle Royale
Battle Royale is a Japanese movie released in 2000. This film is the originator of the Battle Royale genre in the film industry. Although the plot is similar to The Hunger Games, Battle Royale has a different setting. The film is about high school students that have to survive by killing each other. The film is adapted from a best-selling Japanese novel with the same title by Koushun Takami, released in 1996.
The film starts when the Japanese government started a program called Battle Royale. This program is held periodically and the participants are chosen randomly from all over Japan. The class chosen to participate is the Class B of Shiroiwa Junior High School. With a total of 42 students, 21 male and 21 female, they are kidnapped when they are going on a study tour. When the students wake up, they are left on an island that’s prepared to serve as an arena.
They are given food, map, and various weapons. The students wear an explosive necklace and it will explode when they disobey the orders. The film was banned from airing in several countries. Still, this film has tons of fans.
4. The Condemned
Steve Austin the famed WWE wrestler has tasted the film industry too. In The Condemned, he is one of the inmates that is sent to an island to fight and kill each other. The film directed by Scott Wiper was released in 2007 un Lionsgate. This film is not as exciting as the other Battle Royale film but will still provide entertainment when you are bored.
5. The Beiko Experiment
The Beiko Experiment is one of the films you have to watch if you are a fan of horror films. The film is about employees at an office that was being terrorized to kill one another for their survival. Set in a non-profit office, Mill Mill, in Columbia, several employees, Mike Velch (Jason Gallagher, Jr.), Leandra Jerez (Adria Arjona), Wendell Dukes (John C. McGinley), and COO Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn) comes to work as usual.
But the situation changes when the windows are closed with a giant metal to lock everyone inside the building. Then a voice comes from the intercom saying that the 80 individuals in the office have to kill two of their coworkers or they will suffer from a heavy consequence. The film that was released in 2017 attracts many fans, especially the natural acting that shows the horror of the plot.

6. Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road is a franchise that exists in game and film industries. In the film, Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy is about the world post-nuclear war. Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is one of the survivors, captured by the army of War Boy, under the leadership of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Max is later imprisoned.
In a chaotic world, humanity is scarce. Everyone has to survive with their own ability, and only the strong will survive. In the prison, Max is forced to donate his blood to one of the sick War Boys named Nux (Nicholas Hoult). Nux needs a blood supply to survive. A battle soon erupts in the deserted area. Living and survival is the only purpose in this film.
8. The Tournament
The Tournament was a British film released last 2009. The film is about businessmen and various important people that held a tournament every seven or ten years. The tournament requires all participants to kill one another. The tournament is held in a big city. There’s no limitation in the number of participants. Unlike other Battle Royale films, the winner in The Tournament is granted a large amount of cash.
9. Circle
Circle is a psychological horror film released last 2015 and directed by Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione. The film was inspired by a film produced in 1954 with the title 12 Angry Man. The film is about 50 individuals trapped in a dark room within a red circle. They have to follow the rules or they will die. The 50 individuals are asked to choose which one deserves to die and which one deserves to live. Tons of drama happens in the film and the audience is guaranteed to experience the chilling nature of this film. The audience will feel like they are one of the participants and have to choose who gets to be eliminated.
10. The Running Man
Last but not least is The Running Man, a film from the 80s starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film is set in the chaotic 2017. Crime happens everywhere and the situation is worsened by the government that doesn’t allow entertainment show to air in that country. The citizens live in fear and anxiety. The bad situation makes a group of rebels appear and fight the government. Under the intense pressure, the government plans to silence the rebels. The government then created a show called “The Running Man.”
The inmates are required to run from the professional mercenary hired by the government. This is all a part of a TV show made by the American government, where, in the film is said to be totaliter.
