Halloween is all about spooky things and it’s a common tradition in western countries, especially the United States. But as time passes, celebrating Halloween is getting more common in eastern countries too. The celebration of Halloween falls on 31 October and many TV stations and movies air the scariest horror film to celebrate the day.

1. Ghost Stories 

Ghost Stories is a horror film that is different from other films. If most horror films are dominated by jumpscares, then Ghost Stories got something different. The film made by Lionsgate presents a straightforward plot, it almost looks like a semi-documenter film.

Ghost Stories is a psychological drama film, but it’s related to supernatural happenings.

2. Sea Fever 

Sea Fever is a thriller science fiction film directed by Neasa Hardiman. The film shows a death scene caused by a parasite. This parasite is found, lives, and breeds in the Atlantic ocean. The story began with a ship that got stranded in the ocean. The crew has to survive against the parasite that infested their water supply.

3. The Turning 

The Turning is a supernatural horror film released on 5 February 2020. The film is about Kate Mandell, a governess in the 1990s hired to take care of Miles and Flora, after the death of their parents. But the life of Kate, Miles, and Flora are not as simple as they are disturbed by the weird happenings in their house. The film is an adaptation of the horror novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James in 1989.

4. The Grudge

The Grudge is a horror film released in early 2020. The film was made in 2004 and returned with something new. The story began with a single mother and detective named Muldoon who joined an investigation of a case that happens in the skirt of a town. Before the case is closed, Muldoon found out that the case is related to a murder in an abandoned house.

Muldoon that was investigating the house is faced with something horrible. She now has to save herself and her son from the evil spirit that curses her.

5. The Invisible Man

Up next is The Invisible Man, a horror film by Leigh Whannell that was released in February 2020. The film is about Cecilia Kass who is trapped in a toxic marriage with Adrian, a wealthy and brilliant scientist. Cecilia is a victim of domestic abuse done by her husband.

One day, Cecilia’s husband was found dead because of suicide. Adrian left a US$5 million inheritance or Rp69,9 billion for his wife on the condition that his wife is mentally healthy. However, Cecilia believed that Adrian did not commit suicide. She also felt the presence of her husband around her.

6. Color Out of Space  

Color Out of Space is a unique and intriguing film. The story starts with a happy family that later turns into tragedy. It all began with Nathan Gardner and Theresa that brought their third child to the outskirt. The couple got three kids, Lavinia, Benny, and Jack. they live in a village surrounded by a forest, forcing them to adapt to the new situation. But nothing is going well for them as things went horribly wrong.

There are three factors why Color Out of Space is a tense film, first is the change of the house, second is the appearance of the weird creatures, and third is the change in the behavior of the characters.

7. Underwater

Underwater was released in early January 2020. The film is about underwater sea exploration full of mysteries. The crew has to live 11 kilometers under the water surface after an earthquake that happened. Their life turns to worse as Norah and her team are faced with an earthquake that caused great destruction.

They face a lot of challenges, like walking at the bottom of the ocean to reach somewhere safer so they can contact for help. But things are not as simple because they are followed by a creature that is ready to devour them.

8. Antebellum

Antebellum was released in August 2020. The film is about a successful writer named Veronica Henley ( Janelle Monáe) that found that she is trapped in a horrible reality and she has to crack a mystery before everything is too late.
 
In the film, Veronica faces a nightmare as she time travels. She lives in the 19th century as a slave in the Southern part of the United States where she also meet her ancestor.

9. Swallow 

At number nine is Swallow, a film about a psychological disorder that may lead to death. The film is bout a psychological disorder named Pica, an individual with this disease tends to eat objects that are not nutritious for the body and may cause death. The film is centered on the character named Hunter, a young woman who just got married. She lives a happy life with a wealthy man. But her disorder may make you uncomfortable watching the film.

10. The New Mutants

The New Mutants is a spin-off of X-Men. The film is about a group of teenagers from different backgrounds. They are Rahne Sinclair, Illyana Rasputin, Sam Guthrie, Roberto da Costa, and Danielle Moonstar. The scene where their power is revealed is quite intense and dark.
