PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a console that changed how we play games, especially in the era of online multiplayer. However, there are some local co-op and split-screen games that have been forgotten over time. Let's look back at 10 local co-ops and split-screen PS3 games worth playing with friends on this legendary console.
10 Forgotten PlayStation 3 Local Co-Op and Split-Screen Games: Back to the Glory Times with Friends
1. Helldivers
Launched at the end of the PS3's life cycle, Helldivers is a sci-fi top-down shooter suitable for solo or multiplayer play. Players can dive into missions at any time with a second controller. The animation looks good eight years after launch with its satisfying and steady shooting mechanic, in which players have a variety of weapons and tools to use, including giant mechas.
The synth-based soundtrack is outstanding, reminiscent of classic 80s sci-fi films like Blade Runner. The action is reminiscent of alien shooters such as Starship Troopers as players fight waves of aliens as space marines on a hostile planet. Multiplayer is what Helldivers is all about, and playing locally is both fun and rewarding. Players can accidentally shoot each other in friendly fire situations, opening the door for jokes and competition between friends playing in the same room.
2. Blood Knights
Deck 13 has earned a solid reputation for making high-quality variations of the Souls-like genre. The sci-fi-based Surge series is a particular highlight. In 2013, they released the neglected top-down action game Blood Knights. At launch, the game was poorly received as it is a low-cost action RPG with little to do outside of the campaign. The voice acting is unintentionally cute, and the visuals are bad in 2015.
Still, Blood Knights is great fun as a local multiplayer game. Players take on the role of two vampires fighting vampire hunters, vampires, wolves, and other horror-based creatures. Additionally, in two-player games, players can maintain each other's health through the transfer of blood at the risk of losing health to their characters in battle. This can create interesting game scenarios with friends in local co-op.
3. Hunted: The Demon's Forge
Hunted: The Demon's Forge is a dark fantasy action RPG that can be played solo or with friends using split-screen co-op. The game is developed by InXile Entertainment, which is better known for its RPG Wasteland series. Players can control Caddoc, a human swordsman, or E'lara, an elven hunter who is skilled at archery but can also wield a sword.
The action takes place from a third-person perspective, following the popularity of action shooters such as Gears of War. While not perfect, as a co-op game, Hunted is a lot of fun as two players must work together to defeat enemies in cinematic fashion. The missions are linear and more like a beat-em-up game with basic RPG mechanics, but the combat is satisfying, and visually it's still pretty good.
4. Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
A popular action RPG at its time, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel is now a forgotten title two generations later. The game features an expansive, explorable map with lots of replay value in the form of light and dark paths and choices.
In addition to four-player online co-op, the PS3 version of Sacred 2 supports two-player local co-op. It allows the player to explore and fight across a 22 square mile map using the drop-in and drop-out mechanic.
5. Double Dragon Neon
Streets of Rage 4 manages to revive one of the best beat-em-up co-op games for modern audiences. However, Double Dragon Neon had already done it eight years earlier. Neon is a loving homage to the 80s and arcade games. Players can upgrade moves by finding tapes to upgrade abilities.
Double Dragon Neon is a fun reminder of the old classics that were never too long with a story that can be completed in an afternoon - with practice. Like its predecessor, defeating the final boss with two players will force the siblings to fight each other.

6. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3
Dynasty Warriors is often thought of as the same game over and over again. Granted, the game is a somewhat monotonous hack-and-slash RPG with lots of repetitive content. However, it cannot be denied that players can have fun in co-op.
Most games usually include at least a two-player co-op option. Of the spin-offs based on this show, this entry is the best because it uses cel-shading, making it appear closer to the anime. Destroying thousands of mechas has never looked so good.
7. LittleBigPlanet 2
LittleBigPlanet is the PS3's answer to Nintendo's Mario-equivalent platforming series. Is this game able to reach these standards? No, on some levels, like the jump mechanic is more floating and the difficulty level is brutal. However, the four player co-op feature is an interesting addition along with the level creation.
The first game was an excellent proof of concept, but it's the sequel that is the highlight of the series. The resulting fan content for the game was incredible at the time, when the level creation mechanic was so new.
8. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is perhaps the best game this epic series has ever received. This includes both Shadow of Mordor games as well. The game is an action RPG that follows the journey of a ranger, a dwarf, and a wizard who walk parallel to the main character. Players can play with two heroes on the couch, or all three can team up in online co-op.
The ideal way to play is online co-op, but couch co-op is fun too. Under any circumstances, this game is best enjoyed with friends as solo play can be a challenge. It's sadly hard to play at the moment, but there's always hope for a remaster.
9. Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One isn't the first game in the franchise to try co-op features. However, it's this game that takes that idea to a new level. Players can assume the role of several characters, including Ratchet, Clank, Captain Qwark, or Dr. Nefarious in a typical platforming adventure scenario.
The game supports four-player co-op offline only, which is a smart decision. One thing that is a bottleneck is the glitch. If the game had online co-op, it would only make things more chaotic. Overall, the game may not be up to par with the solo entries in the franchise, but it's still fun, even with the glitches.
10 Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance: Fall of Man is another game from Insomniac, like Ratchet and Clank, but more serious. The game is set in an alternate timeline where aliens attacked during World War 2. The first game has split-screen co-op and is offline only.
The first sequel removed that option and had a separate horde-like mode for four-player co-op action. Finally, the third game gives players the option of two-player co-op offline or online. For such a massive series on PS3, it's disappointing that the game was never revived on PS4 in any way, as they were all exclusives. Everything is still worth trying.
