Real-Time Strategy (RTS) is a video game genre where you need a strategy to win. The trademark of an RTS game is warfare games where you need to build an army, nation, collect resources, and other things. It’s called strategy because the game also has other aspects such as economy, infrastructure, and diplomacy.

1. Command & Conquer (1997)

2. Populous: The Beginning (1998)

Populous: The Beginning in the next game on this list. The game developed by Bullfrog Productions has a unique concept where the players will play as a god with a lot of followers. Here the player will need a strategy to beat the enemies using the resources they have. The game has more than 25 missions, and this RTS game is quite exciting to play at that time.

3. Warcraft II: The Dark Saga (1997)

Who has never heard of the Warcraft franchise? The strategy game from Blizzard Entertainment is not just popular on PC but also on consoles. Like in the PC version, the game has straightforward graphics. Here the player will need to plan their kingdom and build an army. Explore every region and beat every enemy you see on the minimap.

4. Syndicate Wars (1996)

Syndicate Wars is an isometric real-time tactical that was developed by Bullfrog Productions. This is the second Syndicate game. Syndicate Wars picks up the story of the prequel where it is set in 2191. The player will control a group of syndicates (called EuroCorp) that were tasked to complete missions, including executing or kidnapping targets.

5. Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1997)

Several months after the debut of the first game, Westwood Studios released Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Similar to its first game, Red Alert is about the war between the two factions. Every faction has the same goal but uses a different method to reach it. Not just managing resources, the player can use their army to destroy the enemy’s base.

6. Warzone 2100 (1999)

The concept of Warzone 2100 is similar to Command & Conquer, what sets it apart is that the game by Eidos Interactive is set in the future. At the end of the 21st century, the earth’s civilization is in ruin because of nuclear war. This forces the player to build a new civilization post-nuclear war with more advanced technologies.

7. Dune 2000 (1999)

Dune 2000 was an RTS game developed by Intelligent Games and released by Westwood Studios. The plot of this game is similar to Dune II and continued in Emperor: Battle for Dune. interestingly, this game was developed with the same engine used in Command & Conquer: Red Alert. The thing that separates both games is the unit and missions.

8. Z (1996)

Z or Zed was an RTS game developed by The Bitmap Brothers. Unlike most RTS games, in this game the player is tasked to conquer every region by controlling the robot army. The player will need to defend the region and conquer another region within the time limit while the robots are being produced.

9. Warhammer: Dark Omen (1998)

Warhammer: Dark Omen was an RTS game adapted from a board game. The game developed by Mindscape is centered on the mercenaries that tried to fight the undead army that tries to enter the Old World. In the game, the player will have to set their offense and defense using the resources they have.

10. Command & Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation (1998)

Last but not least is Command & Conquer: Red Alert Retaliation that has a similar concept to the past Red Alert. However, in Retaliation the Campaign Mode has a new plot, where the player is ordered to do a specific task. In the Allied faction, the player is joined by general Carville, while in the Soviet faction the player is under the leadership of general Topolov. Both generals were entrusted with a secret project that the player was running.
