In addition to the gameplay and characters, one of the important elements in video games is the background of the place, or what is commonly referred to as the setting. The settings in each game will be different from other games, depending on the concept brought by the game. The city is often used as the main setting because the characters of a city form the strength of the story and also the characters we play.
The cities discussed here are spooky fictional cities that are iconic in the game world. From the city under the sea to the city with a high crime rate. Here's a list of the 10 scariest fictional cities in video games. Try to play there yourself if you dare.
1. Rapture - BioShock
An underwater metropolis in the game BioShock. Because it was built with its own system and government, Rapture is a place without politics, religion or a non ideally societal values. The Rapture is stunning to look at, especially with the buildings connected by glass tunnels and bathyscaphes..
Unfortunately, what makes this amazing fictional city so great is also its downfall, as genetic research and the conspiracy that ensues turns most of its inhabitants into twisted monsters. A fictional city that ideally becomes everyone's dream turns into a nightmare.
2. City 17 - Half Life
At first glance, the fictional city of City 17 from the video games Half Life looks like a nice European city. As a city, City 17 has beautiful and modern local architecture; with landmarks of giant alien towers and futuristic forts standing over the city. Until we realize the city is occupied by an alien force that keeps humans from free will and even regulates their emotions.
The fictional City 17 may be a benchmark for a successful city in modern times. However, in the end it became an example of the bad effects of excessive scientific progress. Many theories have speculated whether the fictional city of City 17 was inspired by a real-life city in Bulgaria, Latvia or Serbia.
3. Midgar - Final Fantasy VII
The capital of Gristol and the seat of the imperial government in the Dishonored game. This fictional city was built on money from the exploitation of whale oil. The architecture is extraordinary, taking on a classic yet futuristic steampunk style. If you are rich enough to live on higher ground, good for you; because you don't have to worry about political conspiracies and an unhealthy environment.
But if you don't have enough money, you may have to deal with deadly diseases, gang activity, and swarms of dangerous rats. Dunwall is a representation of a horrifying city destroyed by capitalism and allowed corruption to continue.

In fact, the presence of Batman and other superheroes who always maintain security in this city cannot reduce the criminal activities that occur in Gotham. Are you sure you still dare to go out at night in a city like this?

Despite its architectural beauty, Yharnam has been ravaged by a mysterious plague, becoming full of dangerous animals and insane citizens.
During the plague, the inhabitants of Yharnam formed mobs on the streets and chased those infected with the plague, the beasts that terrorized the city, and the transgressors who dared to set foot on the dark streets. Those unlucky enough to be caught by hordes of deranged citizens will soon meet a terrible death. Life in the city of Yharnam is just about life and death. There is nothing pleasant about this city.

To be honest, any GTA city could take this place, but this is the city setting for the games GTA: San Andreas and GTA V which are a favorite of many gamers. Now if you find yourself living there, we recommend avoiding South Los Santos for your own safety, especially if you have a nice and expensive car. Not that living in another district would actually prevent it from being stolen by passing criminals, but the chances were less. Yes, we all understand very well the situation and conditions in Los Santos.
9. Racoon City - Resident Evil Series
A fictional city where many events in the Resident Evil game series take place. Raccoon City had everything we hoped for. Lots of job opportunities, serenity, and excellent educational institutions. The only problem is, most of the work here belongs to the Umbrella Corporation.
Gamers will understand that pharmaceutical companies are serious about creating a biologically engineered virus that can turn victims into all sorts of monsters. So, if you're desperate for a job in Racoon City, you can offer to be an Umbrella test subject which probably won't end well for anyone living in Racoon City.
10. Silent Hill - Silent Hill Series
This fictional town of Silent Hill which is shrouded in a mysterious mist appears to be a quiet little place at first. However, Silent Hill hides many dark secrets such as cults and paranormal activity and drug traffic. Some say that the city itself calls out to those with troubled hearts. However, the visitors who came never returned.
The fictional city which is the main setting of the Silent Hill game is actually inspired by real life city. It is said that there is a city abandoned by its inhabitants named Centralia, in Pennsylvania, United States. Like Silent Hill, this city of Centralia was known as a "place of silenced spirits" by Native Americans.
