10. Full Metal Panic

Placing on the 10th place in this list is Full Metal Panic, that tells about a military man Sousuke Sagara, an anti-terrorist group called Mithril, who tasked to protect a high school girl named Kaname Chidori. First came out as a novel, this series has been adapted into various media, such as anime series, OVAs, and five different manga titles.

9. Big-O

Big-O can be an answer of, “What if Batman created as a mecha anime?” (We’re not pointing the Batman Ninja here because it’s on different context). It can’t be denied that this anime series is a collaboration of Sunrise and Cartoon Network, so Big-O was developed with a story akin to American animated series.

Big-O takes place 40 years after a mysterious incident that makes the people of Paradigm City lose their memory. Tells about Roger Smith, a “negotiator” with an expensive black suit, his adventure helped by a female android named R. Dorothy Wayneright and his butler Norman Burg. When giant enemies stand in their way, Roger will call Big-O, a giant relic from the city’s past.

8. Aldnoah.Zero

The discovery of hypergate at moon allows humans to teleport to Mars. Upon arrival, they found a futuristic technology called Aldnoah. This discovery is resulting in the diaspora humans on Mars to form the Vers Kingdom and fighting against Terrans, humans who stay on earth. The story is focusing on Inaho Kaizuka, with his prominent fighting and strategy making ability until he can defeat high tech robots using his ancient robot.

7. Code Geass

Code Geass is a mecha anime that revolves around a prince’s journey named Lelouch vi Britannia after receiving a power known as Geass. He later decides to use it to eradicate Holy Britannian Empire, a monarch empire and superpower country that has conquered many nations.

6. Patlabor

Patlabor can be said as the most distinct mecha anime among other titles. Instead created as a fighting machine, the mechas creates here instead created for industrial work, building cities and police work.

Patlabor sets between 1998 to 2002 -- times that relatively “futuristic” remembering that the story was published in 1988. In this world, robots, which called “Labors” are used to do heavy industrial tasks. The story revolves around the Tokyo Metropolitan Police that has an army of Patrol Labors or Patlabors to deal with crimes, terrorisms, and accidents involving Labors.

5. Zoids

Talking about the interesting theme, this series offers an interesting mecha theme: mecha with the shape of animals. Based on model kits, the story provided is unique enough; they slipped story parts in each Zoids toybox.

At first, Zoids tells about the fighting of two countries, Helic Republic and the Zenebas Empire. Their primary weapon is Zoids, a living weapon created from a specific metal from planet Zi. The story keeps on going and getting more complicated with the arrival of new toylines and Chaotic Century, New Century Zero, Fuzors, and Genesis in the form of an anime.

4. Macross

This mecha anime also has different mecha, unlike others, where aircraft can transform into mecha. The title based on one main aircraft that created using alien technology in the story, Super Dimension Fortress Macross that falls on South Ataria archipelago. From that alien technology, humans created an Overtechnology that allows them to develop mechas (variable fighters and destroids), out space aircraft and other high-tech stuff.

Macross always tells that love, culture, and music will always defeat evil. That’s the reason why they often choose idol character in it.

3. Gurren Lagann

Also known as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, this anime is responsible for introducing giant drill to mecha fans. If you feel using giant drill already impressive, then you must watch it till the end, where they fight by throwing galaxies (yes, you heard us right) like throwing dishes.

Created by Gainax, Gurren Lagann tells about earth conquered by King Spiral, Lordgenome, who forcing humans to live underground. Two teenagers who live in an underground village, Simon and Kamina, want to go to the surface by using a mecha called Lagann, they successfully started a rebellion alongside other humans against Lordgenome.

2. Evangelion

Another title created by Gainax. Surprisingly, they produced 2 top mecha animes in this list! Usually called Eva, Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series with Tokyo, Japan as the background. Fifteen years after disasters around the world. The story revolves around Shinji, a teenager who recruited by his father into a mysterious organization called NERV to control a biological machine called Evangelion in a fight against Angels and preventing the next catastrophe..

Bringing various analogies and deep storyline, Evangelion sold pretty well not only in a few circles but also among anime and movie fans.

1. Gundam

The number one spot in this list is inevitably taken by Gundam series! Who doesn't know this popular mecha series of all time? Aired since 1979, the red-blue-white design undoubtedly identical with the original colour of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Already spawning dozens of series and even hundreds of episodes, Gundam has a complex story and the coolest mecha designs ever made. It is proven that gunplas or the plastic model kit based on the mobile suits of the series can be purchased so easy in the nation’s toyshop everywhere, due to its massive popularity.
