Halloween, which occurs on October 31st later, feels this is the right time to watch Japanese horror movies with your friends. If you’re confused about where to start, we have created a list of Japanese horror movies that you should not miss. Here they are:

 

15. Suicide Club (2001)

Among many Japanese horror movies, Suicide Club has the most shocking opening scene. This movie is opened with 54 girls who jumped to the fast riding train. This is the start of a mass suicide wave caused by a mysterious website.

 

14. Retribution (2006)

This movie tells about a detective who investigates a string of mysterious murder cases. Troubles expand when a spirit comes to disturb. Unlike other Japanese movies, the spirit in this movie doesn’t come with white, but rather comes wearing red.

 

13. One Missed Call

A group of teenagers shocked by a voice mail that describes how they will die. The situation turns eerie when the message becomes real and one by one must die according to the voice mail. Due to how horror this film is, this movie receives an American adaptation.

 

12. Versus (2000)

A Yakuza group makes a mistake by burying their victims in a haunted forest. Those corpses buried there come back to life as bloodthirsty zombies. Even though it has a low budget, the “messy” style of this movie manages to create an eerie sensation for audiences.

 

11. Uzumaki (2000)

No, this is not a movie about a ninja from Konoha. This horror movie is adapted from a manga by Junji Ito of the same name, the horror manga legend. This movie doesn’t like Japanese horror movies in general, this movie creates fear in its way.

 

10. Audition (1999)

This movie tells a widower who holds an audition to find his dream wife. From this audition, the widower falls in love with a girl who turns out has a scary backstory. Even though it doesn’t have much blood to be categorized as a gory movie, but his movie shows many torturing scenes.

 

9. Kwaidan (1965)

Adapted from Japanese folklore, this movie tells about a snow female ghost who traps men to be killed. Even though it’s a classic, this movie can soothe your eyes with beautiful visuals. The horror created slowly, not by continually surprising audiences.

 

8. Cold Fish (2010)

This movie tells about a serial killer couple who use a fish shop as their cover. Inside their shop, they torture and kill their victims. With said background, you will find killing scenes that you can’t find in other horror movies. The idea for this movie came from a real-life story about a serial killer couple in Japan in 1993.

 

7. Dark Water (2002)

If you love Japanese horror movies with a supernatural theme, you shouldn’t miss this movie. This movie tells about a mother and her child who receive a supernatural disruption in their new apartment. Few scenes look so scary and will force you to sleep at night with lights on.

 

6. Confession (2010)

This movie revolves around a female teacher who tells her students in her class about her plan to avenge her child. The teacher believes that two students in her class act as the suspects. This movie filled with plot twists that makes you question who the real killers in the class.

 

5. Premonition (2004)

Premonition tells about Hideki who suddenly receives an ability to see his child’s future who will due to an accident. With that power, Hideki struggles to prevent his daughter’s death. But without reason, Hideki receives more premonitions regarding other accidents that will kill many people.

 

4. Ju-On: The Grudge (2004)

Ju-On: The Grudge movie maybe serves the famous Japanese horror movie. Due to its success, this movie received an American remake. Revolves around a string of scary stories that happen in a cursed building due to a murder a few years back. If you love a horror movie, you should not miss this one.

 

3. Ichi The Killer (2001)

Ichi the Killer is directed by the same man behind the success of Audition and Crows Zero first two movies, Takashi Miike. Tells about a shy man who rises to avenge his grudge on the Yakuza family. If you can’t stand with gory scenes, this movie is not suitable for you because this movie is very gory and blood everywhere.

 

2. Onibaba (1964)

Onibaba is one of the classic Japanese horror movies. This movie was made by Kaneto Shindo tells about two girls who live in the 14th century when a war among clan occurs in Japan. To survive the war, these two girls trap soldiers in a swamp to be killed and looted. But unbeknownst to them, their actions are being watched by the spirit of the swamp.

 

1. The Ring (1998)

The Ring or also called as "Ringu" is the most legendary Japanese horror movie. This movie is about a reporter who investigates a cursed video that caused massive deaths. Even though you haven’t watched the movie, you sure familiar with a ghost lady who crawling out of the TV in which makes this movie famous for.
