RTS or Real-Time Strategy games’ most common characteristic is allowing the player to control a country or nation with resources (nature, human, and finance) and expand their territory.

With RTS games, the player must plan and strategize their move so their unit will become the strongest.

Unfortunately, the popularity of RTS games dropped compared to in the 2000s. At that time a number of awesome RTS games were released on PC and many gamers played the game. Still, RTS games have a special place in gamers’ hearts. In 2021, many RTS games are being released. What are they? See the list below to find out.

1. Stronghold: Warlords

Stronghold: Warlords is an RTS game released soon in early 2021. Unlike the previous Stronghold game, the RTS game developed by FireFly Studios will have several updates, such as improved graphics and other new features. One of those features is the updated Ai to make the gameplay more challenging and fun.

Stronghold: Warlords is slated to be released on 27 January 2021.

2. TFM: The First Men

TFM: The First Men is an RTS game developed by an indie developer named Gathering Tree. this RTS game is still in Early Access on Steam and will be released in Q2 2021.

3. Humankind

During Gamescom 2019, Sega announced an RTS game titled Humankind. The game is developed by Amplitude and is a 4X strategy game like Civilization. They may look similar at glance but what makes Humankind different is the civilization option in every era.

Humankind is slated to be released on 22 April 2021.

4. Carrier Command 2

Carrier Command is a classic game franchise released in 1988 and rereleased in 2021 under the title Carrier Command: Gaea Mission under Bohemia Interactive. The franchise now belongs to MicroProse and they will release Carrier Command 2. In the game, the player will have full command of a mothership, where they can build many kinds of airplanes and amphibian units.

Carrier Command 2 is slated to be released on Steam in spring 2021.

5. Star Dynasties

Next is Star Dynasties, a sci-fi RTS game set in the outer galaxy after the destruction of Earth. Where humanity builds colonies in space to survive. In the game, the player will act as the leader of a faction in space and tasked with ensuring the survival of their faction.

According to the Steam page, the game developed by Pawley Games is slated to be released this year.

6. Terra Invicta

Terra Invicta is an RTS game developed by Pavonis Interactive and will be published under Hooded horse. The game is about the divided humanity into 7 factions after an alien invasion. The 7 factions have a vision for the future. In the game, you will pick one of the factions that you will lead to control countries and help them develop and fight the enemies via a tactical battle. 

Terra Invicta will be released in 2021 but no release date is confirmed so far.

7. Manor Lords

Manor Lords is an RTS game developed by a Polish developer, Slavic Magic. The game has a Steam page but the release date is still TBA although there’s a rumor that claimed the game will be released in 2021. Manor Lords is a city builder game set in the medieval era. From the trailer, we can see that the graphics of Manor Lords is good, especially for a game developed by one individual.

8. Steel Warzone

Steel Warzone is an RTS game developed by a Chinese developer, Game River. According to the information on the Steam page, the game’s concept is about giant robot battles. From the trailer and screenshot shared, this RTS game looks promising. But the developer still keeps the release date TBA.

9. The Battle for Middle Earth: Reforged 

In August 2020, RTS game fans were surprised with a video showing the gameplay of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth: Reforged. In the 18 minutes video, we saw that an RTS game that was released by EA in 2004 revived with better graphics and gameplay mechanism.

Although it was developed by a group of fans, the video showed a lot of potential.

10. Falling Frontier

Falling Frontier is the next RTS game on the list that is still on Early Access in Steam. Based on the information on Steam, the game will combine classes RTS elements with innovative features including logistic and massive physics.

11. City of Gangsters

City of Gangsters is an RTS game where the player will build a crime syndicate from zero and create a dangerous group set in Chicago, America in 1920.

12. Knights of Honor 2 - Sovereign 

Knights of Honor 2 - Sovereign is an RTS game developed by Black Sea Games that will be released soon under THQ Nordiq. In the game, the player will control all are in Europe, from religion, cities, and the strategy and tactic. To have them under control, the player can appoint positions to help them such as Marshalls, Clerics, Merchants, Diplomats, and Spies.

13. Stellar Warfare

Stellar Warfare is an RTS game developed by Tense Games and slated to be released in 1 June 2021. Like most RTS game, Stellar Warfare consists of building a base, forming an army, and collect resources, but it’s all done in outer space.

14. Starship Troopers - Terran Command

Starship Troopers - Terran Command is an RTS game announced in 2019 by an indie publisher, Slitherine, alongside Aristocrats as its developer. The RTS game is set in the universe of Starship Troopers, where the player will control a planet and fight Arachnids. Ensuring that humanity is the faction that conquers the galaxy, not insects.

15. Age of Empire IV

Age of Empire IV is also an anticipated RTS game. Announced in 2017, no new information is handed out related to this RTS game. Chief of World Edge, Shannon Loftis, stated that Age of Empires 4 is already at the playable phase. Unfortunately, Loftis hasn’t said anything about the release date. But it’s possible that Age of Empire IV is being released this year.
