1. The Boss - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid (MGS) 3 is the prequel to Metal Gear Solid. Released for PS2, the game tells us about Snake’s struggle completing his mission to kill The Boss that was his mentor. As a patriot, The Boss sacrificed himself for the greater good.

2. Mordin Solus - Mass Effect 3

If you are a fan of the Mass Effect franchise, then you are familiar with Mordin Solus. The life scientist from planet Salarian sacrificed himself to take responsibility for his past. Mordin died in an explosion after successfully running project genophage.

3. Tidus - Final Fantasy X

One of the Final Fantasy games with the saddest ending is Final Fantasy X. the game presents strong romance-drama wrapped in a tale of a kingdom going through a rough patch.

The romance between Tidus and Yuna ends tragically. Tidus was not a real person but he is the reason why Yuna gets her smile back and the two fall in love with each other.

4. Gray Fox - Metal Gear Solid

The name Gray Fox is familiar to the ears of Metal Gear Solid fans. In his appearance as the boss character in the first MGS game, he garners praises. So it’s not surprising seeing him make a return in the next MGS game.

In the Metal Gear Solid game released for PS1, Gray Fox sacrificed his life to help Snake beat Metal Gear Rex.

5. John Marston - Red Dead Redemption

The wild west world in Red Dead Redemption is just about the great gameplay, but also the deep story of the main character, John Marston.

Not all main character gets to enjoy a good ending. In the game, John Marston died after being attacked by the Bureau who betrayed him.

6. Lee Everett - The Walking Dead

After the successful tv series, The Walking Dead introduced its video game developed by Telltale Games. Lee Everett was made with the sole purpose of sacrificing his life. After he got infected and made Clementine amputate his arm. Lee still lost his life to keep Clementine alive.

7. Zero - Megaman Zero 4

In Megaman Zero 4, we see how Zero sacrificed his life to save the earth. After beating Ragnarok, Zero died in the explosion. Zero becomes the hero that saved the earth and Ciel lost the person she loves the most.

8. Olga - MGS 2 Sons of Liberty

Besides The Boss, you can also see how Olga Gurlukovich sacrificed her life in MGS 2 Sons of Liberty. She tried to give time for Raiden or Jack to run away, but Soldius Snake killed her easily.

9. Cole Phelps - L.A Noire

Cole Phelps is the main character in L.A Noire that may be a fictional character created by the creatives of Team Bondi. But the majority of the cases in the game is inspired by real events. Unfortunately, Cole lost his life when trying to save two of his friends.

10. Alan Wake - Alan Wake

Alan Wake is a brilliant idea from the creator of Max Payne, Sam Lake and Remedy Entertainment. In the game, Wake is trying to find his missing wife. But facing the unexpected danger, Alan sacrificed his life to keep his wife, Alice alive.

11. Jessie - Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake allows us to see how beautiful Jessie is. The cheerful character is honest and kind. She willingly sacrificed her life to make sure that Midgar is free from the hands of Shinra.

12. Dominic Santiago - Gears of War 3

In Gears of War 3, we see the friendship between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. During an event, Dominic died to save Marcus who is surrounded by monsters by running towards the monsters with explosives. 

13. Tess - The Last of Us 

There’s nothing sadder than the death of Tess in The Last of Us. She died to make sure that Joel and Ellie can escape from the soldiers. She died knowing that she is already infected.

14. Yara - The Last of Us Part II

Yara is a new character in The Last of Us Part II. She is the sister of Lev, an ex-Scar. When Abby, Yara, and Lev is surrounded by the WLF, Isaac appears and threatened to kill Abby. The dying Yara saved Abby by killing Isaac resulting in her death in the arms of other WLF members.

15. Taka - Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai-themed game released exclusively for PlayStation 4. Besides the adventure of Jin Sakai freeing the Tsushima island from the Mongols, the game also has a tragic story about sacrifice. You will see Taka, a blacksmith, of died tragically to save Jin.
