In One Piece, Silver Rayleigh or the man known as the “Dark King” was the former first mate of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. But, now he has retired as a pirate and chose to become a coating mechanic. 

If only he didn’t choose to retire and keep on sailing, it’s possible that Rayleigh would have been the most powerful pirate in the current timeframe of One Piece. He could even become the Pirate King if he wanted to. Here are the reasons why Rayleigh could be the most powerful pirate if he chooses to get back on sailing!

Allegedly Was The Strongest Swordsman

Silver Rayleigh is a master swordsman. Throughout the story, Luffy’s mentor only once used his sword, which was when fighting against Kizaru. Rayleigh also said that it had been a long time since the last he fought using his sword.

Gol D. Roger’s “Righ-hand Man” also claimed that he’s not as good in fighting as the days when he’s younger and healthier. Just imagine, even in his twilight years, he was still able to match Kizaru’s prowess. Then, how strong was he in his prime years actually?

There are several theories that say that Rayleigh was once held the title as the strongest swordsman in the whole world before Dracule Mihawk. It sounds quite reasonable seeing his nickname as the “Dark King” might reflect his swordsmanship.

However, does this mean that his title as the best swordsman has been stolen by Mihawk? Not necessarily so, it could be Rayleigh himself who ditched the title just because he did not like it. In the writer’s opinion, Mihawk might not be able to match Rayleigh.

Feared by Garp

Garp once said that to face the two legendary figures like Shirohige and Rayleigh, the Marines would need to go through meticulous preparations. This means that Garp has already considered Rayleigh at the same level as Shirohige, who once was “The Strongest Man in the World”.

That’s why Luffy’s grandfather didn’t want to mess around with the former first mate of the Pirate King.

One of the Haoshoku Haki Users

Haoshoku Haki is a type of Haki that is only mastered by a few people who have the potential of becoming a King or leader. Luffy has been taught by Rayleigh in mastering all types of Haki. This is an indication that Rayleigh himself also has the potential to become the Pirate King.

Unfortunately, after the death of his captain, Rayleigh decided to disband Roger Pirates and retire. If he was still sailing as a pirate, he might be able to fill Roger’s shoes as the new Pirate King. Yet Rayleigh was not interested in the title and chose to pass it down to the next generation, Luffy.

It’s highly likely that the Haki possessed by Shanks was the end product of Rayleigh’s mentoring. With the god-level of Haki in his twilight years, Rayleigh could become a Yonkou if he wished so. However, he has decided to retire so he will not set a sail ever again.
