Weak Hero Class 1 is one of the successful Korean live-action series that brought a webtoon story to the screen. Blending school drama, violence, and friendship, the series captured a wide audience since its release in 2022.

However, like many adaptations, the drama version of Weak Hero Class 1 comes with several noticeable changes from the webtoon. Here are three major differences that give each version a distinct tone and emotional impact.

Different Antagonist Characters: Young Bin Only Exists in the Drama

One of the most striking differences between the drama and the webtoon is the presence of a major antagonist. In the live action version, the character Young Bin (played by Kim Su Gyeom) plays a key villain who fuels much of the conflict. He teams up with Oh Beom Seok and becomes a central enemy to Yeon Si Eun and An Soo Ho.

However, in the webtoon, Young Bin does not exist at all. The conflict is more psychologically driven and revolves around the jealousy and strained relationships among the main characters. Without Young Bin, the webtoon centers more intensely on the emotional triangle between Yeon Si Eun, An Soo Ho, and Oh Beom Seok, making the narrative feel more personal and emotionally rich.

Young Bin’s presence in the drama raises the level of physical violence, but it also slightly shifts the focus away from the internal conflicts that are central in the webtoon.

Portrayal of An Soo Ho: Tough Fighter vs Smart but Lazy Student

An Soo Ho (played by Choi Hyun Wook) is portrayed quite differently in the two versions. In the drama, he is a skilled boxer, strong and fearless in fights, but not good at academics. He is shown as a part-time worker, often exhausted from juggling school and work to support himself.

In contrast, the webtoon presents Soo Ho as an intelligent student who simply lacks motivation and finds school boring. He is cheerful, popular, and often wins awards, using the prize money to help his classmates—showing a generous and empathetic side.

This distinction affects how audiences perceive Soo Ho’s character. In the drama, he appears more like a gritty "survivor" shaped by hardship. In the webtoon, he feels more like a laid-back but dependable informal leader, liked for his kindness and loyalty.

Oh Beom Seok’s Transformation and Motives: Loneliness vs Jealousy

Oh Beom Seok (played by Hong Kyung) plays a central role in both versions, but his emotional background differs significantly.

In the drama, Beom Seok is a transfer student who was bullied at his previous school. He feels lonely and unrecognized, especially since An Soo Ho never follows him on social media. This leads to feelings of rejection and betrayal, which drive his actions.

In the webtoon, however, Beom Seok’s motivation stems from jealousy. He envies Soo Ho’s popularity, intelligence, and cheerful personality. He even badmouths Soo Ho in front of Yeon Si Eun, trying to damage his friend’s image to make himself look better.

Their climactic moments also diverge. In the drama, Beom Seok shows regret after Soo Ho falls unconscious due to a group beating. Meanwhile, in the webtoon, after Soo Ho falls from the school rooftop during bullying, Beom Seok feels no remorse at all.

These differences reflect the varying emotional intensity and character complexity in each version. The webtoon reveals a much darker side of Beom Seok, while the drama gives him a more humanized, conflicted persona that feels more grounded in reality.

Although both adaptations stem from the same source, Weak Hero Class 1 live action and webtoon offer distinct experiences. The drama focuses more on physical action and emotionally dramatic storytelling, while the webtoon dives deeper into internal struggles, jealousy, and character dynamics.

For fans of the series, watching the drama and reading the webtoon can provide a fuller perspective on the story's complexity and its characters. These differences enrich the Weak Hero universe and make it relatable to a broader audience.
