Bartholomew Kuma maybe once served as a villain who appeared before Straw Hat Pirates. But it turns out he doesn’t want to end them with one reason: Luffy, the son of Monkey D. 1. Taught Sabo How to Fight

When Sabo freshly joined the Revolutionary Army, Kuma taught him how to fight. One reason why Sabo can be as strong as he is today because of Kuma’s teachings. Sabo also said that Kuma is a kind man. This is why Luffy’s brother gets enraged when seeing Kuma slaved by Tenryubito.

2. Thriller Bark

After witnessing an intense fight against Gecko Moria, the Straw Hat Pirates were exhausted, and at that time, Luffy passed out. But they could not celebrate their victory because also at that time, a Shichibukai came before their eyes, Bartholomew Kuma at Thriller Bark. Kuma had a duty to eliminate Luffy. With his Ursuru Shock attack, almost all people at Thriller Bark passed out, except Zoro, who still stays conscious.

Zoro then fought against him, but because of a large gap between the two's fighting abilities, Zoro couldn't defeat the guy who ate Nikyu Nikyu no Mi. In the end, Zoro pleaded Kuma to spare Luffy. Zoro was even willing to sacrifice his life for his captain. Zoro stated that Luffy would become the King of Pirates.

Kuma agreed with Zoro’s plea to spare Luffy but with one condition: Zoro must accept all battle scars that Luffy received during his battle at Thriller Bark. Kuma could absorb Luffy’s wounds with his Devil Fruit’s ability, and Zoro accepted his offer, and then Kuma left the place.

3. Shabaody Archipelago

One Marine Admiral, Borsalino, or Kizaru was tasked to capture all Supernova who gathered at Shabaody. He managed to defeat almost all Supernova, but when facing with Straw Hat Pirates, Kuma appeared in the sudden and wanted to help them. Previously, Kuma told Rayleigh if he is a Revolutionary Army member that has a blood relation with Luffy.

They were getting thrown by Kuma to a different place one by one. If Kuma didn’t act at that time, maybe the Straw Hat Pirates already a history.

4. Guarding Sunny Go

After being abandoned for two years by Straw Hat Pirates, Sunny Go still on Shabaody. Before being reprogrammed by Vegapunk, Kuma had a favor: he wanted to be reprogrammed to protect Sunny Go until the Straw Hat Pirates came back. Vegapunk granted his wish, and Kuma guarded the Sunny Go for two years.

When the time comes, Franky came and shocked after saw Kuma’s body filled with scars and wounds. During his service, Kuma fought against pirates who were trying to steal Sunny Go. Unfortunately, this is the last time Kuma could save the Straw Hat Pirates because, after that, his conscious was gone forever.
