In the Captain Tsubasa series, we see numerous football geniuses, such as Tsubasa, Hyuga, or Wakabayashi. They all are products of their respective managers/coaches who once were professional players. On this occasion, the writer would like to talk about these coaches. Let’s get into the discussion!

1. Tatsuo Mikami

Tatsuo Mikami was Wakabayashi’s personal coach when he was first introduced into the story. He had a significant role as a coach at the inception of the Japanese Youth Team. Later on, Mikami was appointed to be the coach of U-19 Japan.

Mikami was the first person who recognized Roberto as the former Brazil international when he first brought into the series. That’s because Mikami is a fellow former professional player, as he was a former goalkeeper of the Japanese national team in the past.

It’s not a surprise that Wakabayashi reached his potential and became a world-class goalkeeper. Under the wings of someone who also had been the goalkeeper for Japan, surely there were a lot of things that Wakabayashi had learned from him.

2. Minato Gamo

Minato Gamo was the coach for All Japan Youth as Mikami’s replacement who went ill in the Asian Qualifiers. Gamo was also the one who formed the Real Japan 7 (RJ7) team to push the Japanese junior team in honing their skills.

Back when he’s playing for the Japanese national team, Gamo played as a forward. Gamo is also the one who’s responsible for discovering many talents, such as Aoi Shingo, Hino Ryoma, Tomeya Akai, as well as other players. As the head coach of Japan at the World Youth, Gamo contributed greatly as the head coach with Tsubasa as the core player of the team and Shingo as the rising star.

3. Kozo Kira

Kozo Kira once was the coach at Meiwa FC, and he’s currently the head coach of Olympic Japan. He’s also the one who personally trained Kojiro Hyuga and helped him to master various high-level techniques, such as Tiger Shot, Neo Tiger Shot, dan Raiju Shot. Kira was also the one who gave Hyuga a black heavy ball to be used in training his shot on the coast of Okinawa.

When he was playing as for the Japanese national team, Kira played in the midfield position. That’s why he was able to read Tsubasa’s movements when Meiwa was playing Nankatsu. In the Rising Sun series, it’s said that he was a member of the Japanese team that won the bronze medal in the tournament in Mexico.

4. Roberto Hongo

Roberto Hongo’s encounter with Tsubasa Ozora seemed to be destined. With Tsubasa’s father’s recommendation, Kodai Ozora, Roberto went to Japan to meet a specialist who could cure his retina. That was when Roberto met Tsubasa and started coaching him at Nankatsu elementary.

Roberto himself was a former professional player who played for Sao Paulo, in Brazil. Under Roberto’s wings, Tsubasa has successfully mastered numerous high-level techniques, such as Drive Shot and Skywing Shot. However, at one point, Tsubasa had to play against Roberto who coached the Brazilian national team in the World Cup.
